1981 Porsche 911 SC

Highlights

  • Restored bodywork
  • Original interior
  • Engine rebuilt

The Appeal

While prices of seventies-era 911’s have disappeared off into the stratosphere, its eighties descendant remains more affordable and yet, with the generation who had a poster of one on their bedroom wall now increasingly in a position to acquire one, it seems only a matter of time before the good examples follow suit.
This early eighties SC Targa has been treated to an extensive restoration by its previous owner, a collector, who took care of the bodywork and engine. The current owner had always lusted after a 911 and was seduced by this car’s beautiful appearance and delicious exhaust note but unfortunately finds himself unable to enjoy it fully due to ill health and hence is offering it for auction.
The interior remains original with its eye-catching and, some would say, mind-bending Pasha cloth upholstery and a fresh set of black overmats ready to go in. So if, like the seller, you had always dreamed of a 911, maybe this could be the one: with the practical Targa roof, it would be the perfect way to enjoy the start of the summer. The Interior

  • All original
  • Striking ‘Pasha’ fabric upholstery
  • Black mat set supplied
While the most obvious feature of the interior is the distinctive design of the seat fabric, of course when you’re seated behind the attractive three spoke steering wheel, looking at the road ahead, it’s not really in your field of vision. But it remains an eye-catching invitation into the classic 911 driving environment and, once you’re there, the five dial dashboard is in good condition and, with the exception of the radio, everything works as it should.
The seats themselves have also worn well which is why the previous owner probably didn’t feel the need to include the interior in the previous restoration and it’s only really the light coloured carpets that let the side down a little, though a fresh set of black overmats is included ready to install. The targa top fits securely though does have a small tear in the leading edge. Overall, though, it’s nicely original and with a small amount of attention, will match the condition of the exterior.

The Exterior

  • Stunning metallic red
  • Whale tail spoiler
  • Lovely Fuchs alloys
The photographs tell their own story here: the car presents very well and, with compact dimensions that make the modern 911 look a little bloated, its lithe design looks absolutely stunning in metallic red. Post restoration, the paintwork remains in very good condition, with just a few chips, some of which have been touched in. The restoration was clearly a quality and thorough job, with all of the fixings reportedly nickel-plated, for example.
The Fuchs wheels are in very good order and all the tyres have good tread. Underneath is particularly clean and perhaps reflects the very limited mileage that the car has covered, totalling little over 1500 miles in the last 12 years. Overall, it’s a real head-turner and sure to attract positive attention wherever it goes.

The Mechanics

  • Rebuilt 3.0litre flat six
  • 5 speed manual gearbox
  • Drives well
Under the whale tail spoiler, the engine bay is very clean and, indeed, still looks fresh from its restoration. It reportedly shows no leaks and there is no smoke on startup or in use. The seller tell us that the car drives exactly as it should and notes that although the unassisted steering is a little heavy at parking speeds, it soon lightens up at speed. Acceleration is said to be strong and while the lovely exhaust note dominates, there are no other untoward noises to distract from the driving experience. This Porsche is ready to be enjoyed.

Summary

A lovely example of a 911 SC Targa that is ready to be enjoyed. Get in before prices get out of hand.
