The Appeal
During the 1970s Porsche added more power and luxury to the 911 but stayed true to the car’s scintillating principles. A wider body evolved the aesthetics and helped transfer the power to the ground more effectively.
From 1978 the SC got the wider body and increased luxury plus the naturally aspirated version of the lighter, stronger 3litre engine from the Turbo.
This beautifully presented 3litre SC has been painstakingly restored and improved by its owner of 30 years. With freshly rebuilt engine and gearbox - they still need running in - and bare metal respray in Tobacco metallic bronze, this much-loved car has had all the investment required to deliver a highly rewarding experience to the new owner.
The History and Paperwork
- Unfortunately at the time of writing we had little information on the car’s history or the restoration work
- Owned by an engineer for 30 years who has undertaken lots of work on the car:
- Fully rebuilt engine and gearbox with less than 4,000kms covered since
- Engine and gearbox still need running in
- Various upgrades to the engine but we do not know the full details
- Bare metal respray in original Porsche Tobacco bronze metallic
- New Firestone tyres
- We are told that the car has a thick history file covering all of the work
The Interior
- Highly original cloth velour interior in very good condition
- Air conditioning is said to run ice cold
- Headlining is factory correct and appears to be original
- Two small rear seats with seatbelts
- Aftermarket stereo system
- Light brown velour seats in very good condition with no immediately visible signs of wear
- Interior trim complete and in very good condition, with good vinyl fit and no obvious issues with stretch or loose glue
- Dashboard in good condition with no visible signs of marks or damage
- Original three spoke leather-rimmed Porsche steering wheel
- Classic five dial oval fascia display
- Fire extinguisher
The SC cleverly added luxury features like electric windows and air conditioning without losing sight of what made the 911 so revered in its day. The very original interior of this car shows why: the classic 911 oval dashboard with its clearly arranged five dials remains virtually unchanged from the first 1960s cars and the switchgear is similarly kept to a minimum.
The interior of this car is in very good condition, the period-correct fabric seats with their light brown fleck pattern seemingly virtually factory fresh. There are two small rear seats, with seatbelts, which can also be folded down to increase luggage storage. The headlining appears to be original and the carpets are in good condition. There is an aftermarket stereo fitted and the switches and handles appear complete and undamaged.
The same story continues under the ‘frunk; where the carpet is in good, unstained condition.
The Exterior
- The exterior of the car is in excellent condition, reflecting the significant investment by the long term owner
- Fresh bare metal respray finished in factory correct Tobacco
- Tobacco bronze metallic paintwork in very good condition
- Bumpers and rubber trim in similarly very good condition
- Fitted with 15inch ATS ‘cookie cutter’ alloys finished in black with polished rims
- New Firestone tyres fitted all round
- Wide body ‘SC’ body style with even stance across and along the body
- Restoration and dry, warm Spanish life means the body is very solid
Some colours just seem to suit the 911 and leafing through the photos of this car Tobacco metallic bronze certainly seems to be one of them. We are told that this car has recently received a full bare metal respray finished in its original factory colour. It looks superb, clearly a high quality job, and the condition is very good with no obvious marks or scratches visible.
The car has apparently spent most or all of its life in the dry, warm Spanish climes so the bodywork and underside reflect that.
It sits on pretty ATS ‘cookie cutter’ 15in black alloys with polished rims and there is a fresh set of Firestone tyres fitted.
The Mechanics
- Matching numbers car with rebuilt engine and gearbox
- Car has only covered 4,000kms since the work so still needs running in
- We understand that the car has various mechanical upgrades but unfortunately do not know their details
- Factory fitted with the 3litre naturally aspirated version of the lightweight 930 Turbo engine developing 180-200bhp in standard form
- 5spd gearbox
Dropping the powerful and strong 3litre engine from the 930 Turbo into the SC - minus the turbo - gave the wide body car the power to go with the enhanced aesthetics. This car apparently had a full engine and gearbox rebuild around 4,000 kms ago. It is so fresh that it still needs running in. We are told that the mechanical work included applying a number of upgrades to the car but regrettably we do not have details on what those are.
As you might expect of a car so comprehensively invested in by its long term owner, there is a thick history file covering the work.
Summary
Continuously improved throughout its life, the original 911 got more powerful and more luxurious in the late 1970s with the introduction of the SC. The aesthetics were also evolved with a wider, more purposeful body.
This beautifully presented SC has been lavished with care and investment by its long term owner. Freshly resprayed in original Tobacco and with a comprehensive engine and gearbox rebuild, it is in many respects a virtually new car. Someone else has done all the work, all the buyer has to do is enjoy it.
