The Appeal
Introduced in 1969, the Clubman was the fourth incarnation of the ever popular and classless Mini. By this time British Leyland was starting to feel the pressure from imports from Europe and Japan, but Mini sales were still high and the new Clubman, with its restyled squarer nose was produced alongside the earlier round nose MkIII budget models throughout the 1970s.
When the new Austin Metro was introduced in 1980 production of the Clubman Estate came to an end and this example is thought to be one of the last built. With remarkably low mileage it was first registered in 1981 and remains in excellent and largely original condition. It has some sensible upgrades, including disc brakes, and has had various mechanical parts replaced over the years, but it is thought to wear its original paint and trim and have its original matching numbers engine and gearbox.

Purchased by the Seller in January 2021 he “had to own it as soon as he saw it” and it has been part of his small collection of highly original cars. Driven only occasionally the Clubman has covered just 23,572 miles from new and remains in exceptionally nice condition.

The Exterior
- Emberglow Red paint with gold stripes, thought to be original with only one or two minor marks here and there

- BL styled steel wheels with older Dayton tyres, good tread remaining

The Mechanics
- 998cc A Series engine, head upgraded to run on unleaded by Mini Sport
- Original gearbox with clutch replaced in 2020
- New fuel lines, braided from tank to carburettor, complete with filter
- Carburettor rebuilt
- Oil seals replaced, new inner and outer CV boots
- Timing chain, water pump replaced in 2020
- New radiator, hoses and thermostat 2020
- Front disc brake conversion
- Power Spark electronic distributor, new leads and spark plugs
- New battery and solenoid January 2021
- Suspension rebuilt
- Clean, solid and corrosion free underside
- Tidy and presentable engine bay, appears remarkably original
- Very few miles covered over past year, but has been well stored and maintained
- Starts easily and drives as good as it looks, no weird noises and a solid feel.
Summary
This is a particularly nice example of a car that was once common but now is rarely seen, especially as untouched as this.
Although it has had some sensible upgrades to make it more useable on today’s roads, none of them are irreversible as original parts and numerous spares are with the car.
With electronic ignition, rebuilt unleaded head and better brakes it is probably a lot more reliable and nicer to drive than it was when new. With such low miles, and period looks inside and out it really is one for the connoisseur.
