Pre-bids

1981 Mercedes 280 SLC Auto

The Appeal

  • Just three registered keepers with current one since 2011
  • Beautifully and highly preserved example in classic colour scheme
  • Full service history by Mercedes-Benz
  • Fantastic stylish 4 seat pillarless coupe
  • Rare to find in this condition and with this history

The Appeal

The enduring popularity of the R107 roadster has tended to overshadow the SLC coupe. Yet this is an extremely good car, one that is imbued with all the qualities of the convertible but with extra space - and, we suggest - extra style thanks to a longer wheelbase. These are exquisitely styled pillarless, four-seat coupes that are perfect for touring.
This exceptionally rare UK RHD SLC was delivered new by Normand (Mayfair) Ltd, prestigious Mercedes Benz dealer on Park Lane London to the Company of Anderson of Smithfield of Charter House London. There are three registered keepers, but the first two were the previous keeper and his own company - so the same driver. The vendor is only the third registerd keeper and acquired the car in 2011 to add to his large classic car collection. The car has been in dehumidified storage since 2012 and remains in the same order as when purchased by the vendor.
The Service History is meticulous and shows the car had been main dealer maintained every year by Normand of Mayfair showing 32 stamps and many invoices. We doubt there is a SLC of similar vintage - perhaps we could widen that to any car of similar vintage - that can claim to have been regularly serviced by the same dealership since the day it was registered.
Finished in fetching gold metallic with brown velour interior, this is an extremely good example of the SLC. It is amongst the best we’ve seen in a while - and these cars don’t come to market often - and with its remarkable history will appeal to discerning collectors. One not to miss.

It feels hard to overstate the condition of this highly original car. There can be few SLCs as well kept and neatly preserved as this car. It is finished in fetching gold metallic with a lovely characterful brown velour interior. The state of preservation across interior and exterior is quite remarkable.
The car is as structurally solid as the condition implies with no work required by the seller. It has been carefully dry stored in recent years as part of a high end classic car collection. We understand that everything works correctly - you will note the heater motor and panel were removed to enable inspection of the bulkhead (which is well presented).

The Mechanics

  • M110 2.8L straight six engine
  • 4spd automatic gearbox
  • We understand that the car is a matching numbers example
  • Remarkable service history with 32 stamps, 31 by the same supplying garage
  • Very few miles since last service by supplying dealer as detailed above
  • New fuel pump and filter
  • New quality battery recently fitted
  • No reported running or driving issues except as noted below
The vendor tells us:
“The car starts, runs and drives, stops. However due to its long-term storage some minor recommissioning may be required. The car runs with excellent oil pressure but runs uneven on tickover and will require adjustment.”
Mercedes’ M110 straight six is extremely durable so the relatively high mileage of this example is nothing to be concerned about. Key to this car’s considerable appeal is surely that impeccable service history, arguably one of the most fastidious you’re likely to ever find. It shows 32 stamps, 31 of them by the the dealer that supplied the car.
The last service was only a few miles ago and the car is said to start, run and drive well. In the interests of transparency, the vendor has noted some minor points above
