Highlights
- Originally built and then later restored in Australia
- Solid car in great mechanical order
- Impeccable history file
The Appeal
It's a car that's entirely impractical for life in the UK, in essence a bare bones beach buggy, but that is perhaps what gives the Mini Moke its appeal and vast and dedicated following. Originally penned as a military vehicle, the simple and charming design meant that in actual fact the Moke saw more success as a fun car, something of a fashion accessory. To this day the car garners great respect from classic car enthusiasts and is seen as a true cult classic.
This 1981 Leyland Moke is a later Australian built Moke; the Moke enjoyed the majority of its success and popularity here, with production relocating later in the models lifespan. With a well documented history, this older restoration still presents in great overall order and would make a perfect summer cruiser or fun beach buggy.
The History and Paperwork
- Australian built car, first registered 01/01/1981
- Brought into the UK in early 2022 by an avid Moke enthusiast
- Fully UK registered with importation and registration forms and documents still present in the car’s history file
- A well documented car from a history perspective, with various dating certificates and forms detailing the cars production
- Documentation leads us to believe this was a late Australian car built on the Enfield plant not long before they halted Moke production here
- The car is an older restoration, with stamping under the bonnet suggesting the car was restored by Moke specialists Mini & Moke Restorations of Queensland in 2003
- Several photographs of aforementioned restoration
- Various technical diagrams for the car are also present
- Extensive set of invoices for parts bought and work undertaken since the car’s arrival into the UK and from its time in Australia
- V5 registration document present with the vehicle
The Interior
- Simple, rugged utilitarian interior
- Cream vinyl seating front and rear, in good clean shape with just a minor patina in places
- Individual front seats and a bench rear seat
- Grey carpeting throughout
- Good quality wooden dash panel
- Aftermarket Kenwood radio head unit
- Speakers for aftermarket radio situated under the front seats
- Three spoke wooden steering wheel which is somewhat worn but presentable
- Small rear carpeted boot section with aftermarket amplifier
- Wooden finish gear knob
- This is a cabin that certainly does have a level of patina to it but presents nicely and is more than useable in its current form
The Exterior
- A real stand out car from an aesthetic perspective, finished in what stamping on the car indicates to be BMW’s Ceylon Metallic Gold paint
- Complimented by a cream canvas roof panel which is in great shape
- No doors as such but instead roll up side pieces to the canvas roof
- Roof can be removed entirely with relative ease, leaving behind a fold down metal framework
- Metal framing can then be hidden away in a matching cream cover
- Paintwork is in good form with a nice deep shine in places
- There are some markings and blemishes to be seen in areas of the paint, predominantly to the front and rear bumper bars but this exhibits as a good honest car
- 13” alloy wheels sit at all four corners in excellent shape
- A spare steel wheel resides on the rear of the car
- Body coloured roll cage for added passenger safety
- Lighting, trim and glass are all of a good standard throughout
- Overall a thoroughly straight and complete car
The Mechanics
- Well presented engine bay with a host of body coloured parts
- Clean and simple four cylinder engine, backed by a wealth of parts supply and enthusiast support
- Understood to have had some mechanical refurbishment at the request of the previous owner by an independent Moke specialist, including new brake pipes and fluid, a wheel refurbishment and tyre replacement and some work and adjustment to the gearbox
- Fires into life comfortably and with ease and is reported to provide a great fun driving experience, just as a Mini, especially a Moke, should do
Summary
Brilliantly fun, endlessly loveable, the Moke does what all classic Minis do so well, have a wonderful almost irresistible charm to them. This golden Australian Moke presents entirely well both from an aesthetic and mechanical perspective, and with the added versatility of a full canvas roof covering can be comfortably used in the British climate.
Moke appreciation has always been high so good examples are snapped up off the market rather quickly, this one wants for very little, if anything to be enjoyed so if you're in the market for a Moke, or just something fun for the summer, this may be your best bet.
