1981 Lancia Montecarlo

***Vendor supplied images***

Highlights

  • Exceptional low mileage example of Pininfarina’s stunning Lancia Montecarlo coupe with only one owner from new
  • In truly remarkable condition, benefiting from a cherished life spent in sunny and dry South Africa
  • Rare Alquati racing conversion from new with significant power increase over the standard car
  • Presented in the stunning combination of Lancia Red over a tan leather interior

The Appeal

Originally intended to be a replacement for the Fiat 124 Sport Coupe before being usurped by Bertone’s more economical X1/9, the pretty little Montecarlo was a sports car designed and built by Pininfarina for Lancia in limited numbers between 1975 and 1981.
Featuring a transverse mid-engine 1995cc 4 cylinder twin cam and MacPherson struts all round, the Lancia Montecarlo was a great handling and nimble little sports car which naturally excelled on twisty country roads.
Offered here for auction is an astonishingly original one owner from new South African Lancia Montecarlo. Having covered a mere 38,000 miles in the past 42 years, this remarkable example also benefits from an original and highly desirable Alquati racing conversion, delivering a considerable hike in power over the standard car.
Decked out in the desirable shade of Lancia Red over a tan leather interior, this exceptional little Lancia now offers the wonderful opportunity to acquire and enjoy a very attractive and increasingly rare Italian coupe.

The History and Paperwork

  • One owner from new
  • One of only 80 original South African cars and of those, one of only 15 to undergo the Alquati racing conversion
  • MOT and road tax exempt
  • Recent South African import, ready to register
  • Requires first registration with DVLA – a straightforward process. The vendor is a former South African resident and is more than happy to assist with the registration process.
  • Low mileage of only 61,612 KM
  • Supplied with owner’s manual
  • Collection of invoices relating to previous servicing work
  • Spare wheel is present

The Interior

  • Featuring a gorgeous original interior, from the moment you take a seat inside the Lancia the experience is nothing but one of pure Italian style and sophistication
  • The original tan leather interior presents in a fabulous condition throughout, demonstrating only the mildest signs of wear commensurate with its enviably low mileage
  • Simple black vinyl dashboard also presenting in similarly super condition and showing no signs of significant sun damage -  consistent with the car being garaged throughout its life
  • Lovely factory original 3-spoke Momo steering wheel bound in black leather, showing some mild cracking over its upper aspect
  • Headlining is also in a great condition, featuring a pleasingly period fabric in a ruffled style
  • Black carpets appear to also be the original items and present very well considering their age

The Exterior

  • Beautifully proportioned Pininfarina designed body with Series II styling elements of attractive glazed buttresses, split front grill and a brushed aluminium strip across the rear
  • Sitting on a set of awesome 5-spoke Ferrari alloy wheels in an excellent unmarked condition with Lancia centre caps and shod in recent Yokohama rubber
  • Reported by the vendor to be in an excellent rust-free condition and we would have to agree this Lancia presents remarkably well
  • Close inspection of the exterior reveals this Montecarlo to have a generally excellent appearance to the paintwork with only the most minor of occasional blemishes visible, nothing however that would detract from its overall first-rate appearance
  • Body panels appear to be straight and free of corrosion with the same story inside the engine bay, under the bonnet and along the door bottoms and shuts
  • Under the bonnet the Lancia offers a useful carpeted storage area which currently holds the spare wheel and jack

The Mechanics

  • 1995cc twin cam ‘Lampredi’ 4 cylinder unit transversely mounted in a mid-engined configuration
  • Fitted with a rare and desirable Alquati racing conversion from new, featuring improved carburetion, engine internals and a racing cylinder head
  • Consequently this Montecarlo is able to deliver significantly increased performance over the standard model
  • Fitted with upgraded Koni shocker absorbers
  • Under the bonnet the engine and engine bay present in a very straight and original condition without any evidence of significant corrosion
  • Underneath the car also appears very good and free of any significant corrosion or damage

Summary

Produced in limited numbers and only very rarely seen in such a great original condition, this stunning Montecarlo now presents an exceptional opportunity to get behind the wheel and enjoy of one of Lancia’s very best!
