The Appeal 

During the 1970s Ford built some of the best and best-selling ‘warmed up’ saloons, so it comes as a surprise to learn how conflicted they were about entering the hot hatch market. 
The firm really wasn’t convinced that a quick version of its new Fiesta would work. It first tested the water with the 1300S, which had a hatch but was not hot at all. Ford decided to persevere and tasked its revered Special Vehicle Engineering division at Dunton with doing the job properly.  
The result was a Fiesta with a tantalising name: the SuperSport. Aside from some light-touch modifications, the SuperSport played into what Ford did best: made its quicker cars look really, really good.  
The SuperSport worked. It was only available for a year but lived on essentially unchanged as the XR2 and we all know how well that worked.  
This is one of those rare models and one of the last built. Restored and looking highly original, it is a compelling reminder of just how good these first Ford hot hatches were. An opportunity not to be missed for fast Ford fans.  
 

The History and Paperwork

  • We are told that this is a 1981 car
  • The car has been subject of some restoration and it’s in really good and nice condition. It has never been modified or upgraded, always maintained in standard form
  • Unfortunately no service and maintenance history, typical with Spanish cars
  • It has a recent ITV (Spanish MOT) valid to 28/06/2024
  • All Spanish paperwork in order
  • Odometer reads 32910km but as these clocks stop at 99.999 milage cannot be confirmedI 
  • Vendor can help with shipping to other countries (at buyer's expense)

The Condition

  • Very good condition and appears to have been restored
  • Factory standard specification outside and in 
  • Retains all the desirable SuperSport exterior and interior features
  • Four spoke 13in RS wheels with Nexen tyres, both in good fettle 
  • Straight bodywork with good panel fit and no visible marks or chips 
  • Additional driving lights are factory correct
  • Decals, side skirts, arch trim and rear spoiler in unmarked, well kept condition 
  • Interior is superb, a joyous mix of checked trim and simple layout 
  • Seats are in virtually ‘as new’ condition, re-trimmed with the correct Carla red trim
  • Dashboard well kept with no visible cracks or vinyl lifting from backing 
  • Clear dials with good switchgear showing clear white decals
  • Original period-correct radio 
  • Door cards in similar condition with complete, undamaged furniture
  • Four spoke Ford factory correct steering wheel 
  • Spotlights are similar to the original ones but not identical as could not be found
  • Totally rust free underneath as you can see in the photos (again, typical from Spanish cars) and never welded

 The Mechanics 

  • Lightly re-engineered by Ford’s Special Vehicle Engineering unit 
  • Kent Crossflow 1.3litre engine tuned to 64bhp 
  • 0-60mph in 11.8secs
  • Twin choke single Weber carburettor 
  • Lowered suspension 
  • Stiffer rear anti roll bar
