1981 BMW 635CSI Manual

Notice to bidders: The end date of this auction has been extended to accommodate the State Funeral of Her Majesty The Queen

Highlights

  • Extremely elegant dark grey exudes European luxury
  • Rare and desirable 5-speed gearbox
  • Exceedingly clean engine bay

The Appeal

This is the first of the line of BMW’s 6-series grand tourers, originally beginning it’s run in 1976. This 1981 example is the last full production year run of the car which is based on the E12 5-series platform, before it changed to the E28 5-series platform in 1982. With its rich racing heritage and multiple wins across the full range of grand touring championships, the 6-series has proven it’s worth.
With that in mind, the spec and condition of this particular 635 exceeds expectations. With a rare 5-speed Getrag transmission, and rich tan leather interior, there isn’t much left to be desired for a GT coupe of this age.

The History and Paperwork

  • Genuine owner’s manual included
  • Substantial history file included with invoices for parts and labour
  • MOT exempt, but new MOT to be completed by current owner
  • 101,446 genuine miles
The current owner purchased the vehicle during the pandemic as a project to enjoy and restore along the way. With the original intention to tour the car for years to come, another project has now sprung up and the owner is now changing focus, as you do.
The history file shows the recent bits of work done, which have been mostly routine maintenance, body, and restoration related purchases. The vehicle has recently been resprayed in the original colour, with care being taken to replace the black accent trim line as well.

The Interior

  • Black and tan interior perfectly suits the grey exterior
  • All electrical equipment said to be in working order
  • Exceptionally clean boot, with some tools and spare tire included
If you’re looking to purchase this car, we’re going to go out on a limb and assume that it won’t be the first BMW you’ve ever sat down in. We will additionally wager to say that we’re sure you’ve noticed that whenever you sit down in any BMW vehicle at all, it’s got a similar vibe; a golden theme, or a portfolio of similarities, which give it that traditional BMW touch-and-feel we’ve all come to adore.

It’s the sort of stern and powerful German class which is present; summed up notably by the unmistakable tilt of all of the instrumentation and controls in the centre console and dashboard towards the driver. It’s as if to state who is in control, who’s in power, and who gets to decide what’s what and where we’re going; don’t ask questions. Well, that feeling is there, and it’s very traditionally BMW-ish, but with a late ‘70s – early ‘80s twist that so very well accents its age.
The overall condition of the interior is good but used. While there is wear found on the seats and carpets, this does not at all detract from the elegance of the vehicle. The seats, front and rear, show some unobtrusive signs of wear, which is normal for a car of this age.

The trim is well composed, all present, and is in good condition. The carpets show no holes or scuffs; just a few stains we wager could be cleaned, and the belts, knobs, and buttons are all in terrific condition.

The Exterior

  • Exterior repainted to high standard
  • Exterior trim in excellent condition
  • Dark Grey perfectly suits the elegant vehicle shape
The exterior of this 635 absolutely shines. The paint looks fresh and tidy, with the trim stripe being intact and in great condition. There are a couple of normal road use paint chips in the front, and a couple small areas where we spotted some paint bubbling on the rear (as pictured) but these are the only things worth mentioning at all.

Brightwork is gleaming, with all of the badges, accents, and exhaust tips being in top condition. The glass itself is in excellent condition with only minor road marks, being better than expected for the age of the car.
The wiper trim, rubbers, grilles, and exterior plastics are all intact, but a couple areas could use some replacing, notably the window rubber seals, as they can be seen to be cracking.
The original wheels are all in excellent condition and show no signs of curb rash or any other really noticeable defects, just a couple marks here and there. The centre caps are all in above average condition.

The Mechanics

  • Servicing up to date
  • Owner states engine runs flawlessly
  • Extremely tidy engine bay
The mechanics of this E24 are all in above average condition. The vehicle was clearly cared for, not only by the current owner, but by its previous owners as well. The ~215 horsepower 3.5l straight six is an excellent runner and is mated to a 5-speed gearbox in excellent working order.

The car fires right up without any smoke, and has a subdued but powerful sound to it. The owner states it drives like a dream and is ready to take touring wherever you’d care to go.
Popping the bonnet open, the first thing we noticed was clean and tidy nature of this car’s engine bay and peripherals. It has been very well cared for, with the cracks and crevices all without dirt and grime, and the plastics and rubbers in a great dark black and unfaded condition.

Summary

This car was designed to give the driver the ultimate driving experience. Without much hesitation, we’re here to confirm the engineering and design elements included in this BMW’s execution do indeed provide that pleasure; part of that due to its age and unmistakable vintage German styling, and part of that due to the condition it currently sits in. While it is not a perfect vehicle, it is not far off from it; and can either be fully restored without much effort, or left to drive and enjoy as it is in its current state for years and miles to come.
