The Attractions
Launched in 1972, the new Alfa Romeo Tipo 116 was named in honour of one of the most famous racing cars of all time, the Tipo 159 'Alfetta' starring in Formula One in the early 1950s, whose transaxle layout and De Dion rear suspension it borrowed. Over the years, the new Alfetta would be produced in different body variants and important new models would be built on its platform, the most popular of which was certainly the GTV, introduced in 1974 and designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, which remained in production until 1987. Sharing several stylistic details with the Alfa Romeo Montreal supercar, the GTV was a truly beautiful car and even the engines lived up to expectations, as was to be expected from the Milanese manufacturer.
This 1980 example is one of the first models equipped with the two-litre version of the famous twin-camshaft Nord engine designed by Giuseppe Busso, which had already been much appreciated on earlier Alfa Tipo 105s. It was aided by the excellent five-speed transaxle gearbox, which offered ideal weight distribution and thus excellent road holding.
Repainted a few years ago, this GTV still looks very good. We have been informed that it was recently serviced in anticipation of sale, and that it has an MOT valid until 2026.
