1980 Volkswagen Type 2 Bay Window Westfalia

Highlights

  • Comprehensive engine rebuild in 2020 with over £4,000 spent
  • In current ownership for over two decades years
  • Equipped with the desirable 2.0-litre 'Pancake' engine
  • Retains its period Westfalia interior with a raft of amenities including a fridge, sink, and cooker
  • Accommodates up to five on the road and four overnight berths (plus one hammock)

The Appeal

With its drivetrain in the rear and an innovative cab-over-wheel design, the Volkswagen Type 2 was almost Tardis-like in the way it maximised interior space. That meant it was ideally suited to camper van conversions, as while, (especially by today's standards), it's rather small on the outside, there's ample space in the cabin to accommodate a whole family. Paired with an elevating roof, as many converted Type 2s were, these transform into a very usable home from home.

The Westfalia is among the most coveted of the original conversions and we're delighted to offer this 1980 Bay Window which sports just that. It's been in present ownership for over two decades and used for many a family holiday, but now it's time for a new custodian to continue the van's preservation. It underwent some restoration when the vendor acquired it and in 2020, received a c.£4,000 engine rebuild.

Seldom do you find original Westfalia interiors so well-preserved, so while there's some bodywork to attend to, this van is eminently worthy of some time and effort to return it to its best.
