1980 Rolls-Royce Camargue

Highlights

  • Rare model
  • Ultra-low mileage
  • Original condition

The Appeal

Based on the Silver Shadow platform with the 6.75 litre V8 engine and a three-speed automatic gearbox, the Rolls Royce Camargue was the most expensive Rolls Royce at the time. Designed by Pininfarina, the Camargue’s clean lines give it an elegant look. Inside was given the luxury treatment with options to have personalised interiors, creating a truly luxurious vehicle.
Just 534 Camargues were produced between 1975 and 1986, making this quite a rare car, especially this one, which has covered just 825 miles since it was shipped from new to Hong Kong, where it has been untouched for over 40 years. Since returning to the UK, the vendor has managed to locate copies of the build sheets and inspection forms, along with the sales invoice and correspondence from the factory and vendor in Hong Kong.

The History and Paperwork

  • V5C is present
  • Sold and registered on the 30th October 1980
  • The car was then shipped to the original buyer in Hong Kong, and it was never registered
  • The Rolls Royce was used for just 825 miles before going into storage
  • It was imported from Hong Kong to the UK in late 2022
  • Registered in the UK on 1st July 2023
  • 0 previous UK keepers listed on the V5C
  • Copy of original build sheet
  • Copies of the initial inspection sheets
  • Copies of correspondence from the Rolls Royce factory and the original buyer
  • Copy of original sales invoice, which shows the Camargue cost £61,720
  • Original number plates

The Interior

  • Finished with Nuella Green Gold leather
  • The original leather has a small amount of patina
  • All of the seats are in good order with no damage
  • The leather on the door cards has some patina, and the walnut trim has started to delaminate in places
  • The leather on the dashboard is in good condition
  • The instruments are untested but look clean, with just a small amount of tarnishing on some of the chrome
  • The odometer reads just 825 miles
  • The wooden fascia is delaminated across most of the dashboard
  • Original Pioneer cassette player is in place, and the radio is fitted lower down
  • The switchgear and dials look in good condition with a minimal amount of wear
  • The headlining is excellent, with no sagging
  • The carpets do have signs of age, especially in the rear, and the driver’s heal pad has disappeared
  • There is some wear to the sill plaques and a couple of small dings
  • Unfortunately, the main carpet inside the boot is missing
  • The original tool kit is in place
  • A new battery has been fitted, and the original battery cover is present

The Exterior

  • Finished in the original colour of Laurel
  • The paintwork looks to be all original and untouched for many years
  • The shut lines are nice and straight, and the doors close with a reassuring clunk. The passenger door window frame does sit out from the body a touch
  • The passenger door mirror is missing
  • There are some minor dings which have been picked up from over 40 years of storage
  • There is some corrosion along the bottom edge of the rear window
  • Looking around the wheel arches, these are excellent, with no blistering to the paint
  • The windows appear to be in good condition
  • Window surrounds and seals look in good order, with minimal tarnishing to the trims
  • Headlights are free from any chips or cracks
  • The indicator and sidelight lenses are free from damage
  • Both Lucas fog lights are present with covers
  • The grille is in excellent condition, and sitting pride of place is the Spirit Of Ecstacy
  • Both rear light units are in good condition with no splits or cracks
  • The bumpers have no dents, but the rubbers have deteriorated
  • Steel wheels are complete with stainless steel hubcaps and trims
  • The tyres are the originals and, as you can see, do need to be replaced

The Mechanics

  • 6.75 (six and three-quarter) engine
  • Three-speed automatic gearbox
  • Cruise control
  • The engine has been started with a separate fuel supply piped in
  • It runs and sounds smooth
  • All of the mechanical side would need a full recommissioning
  • The underside does have some surface rust and under seal which has flaked off with age
  • With the tyres in the condition they are, the car has not been driven, so we do not know how the gearchange is

Summary

This is undoubtedly a restoration/recommissioning project. With just 825 miles covered and some recommissioning, there is no reason the Camargue couldn’t be on the road for many more years.
Just take a minute to think about the Camargue… it was the most expensive production model produced at the time, with a level of luxury and craftsmanship unique to Rolls Royce. What more could you ask for? It’s certainly worth the effort.
