The Appeal

While Volkswagen wooed buyers with the Golf GTI, Ford stuck to what it new best for its fast Escorts: simple, tried and tested mechanicals, a bigger engine and some tasty decals.

Where the Golf is technologically impressive, the RS2000 won buyers over with its lightweight, nimble handling and rally-inspired specification. It was the last hurrah for this popular set up before the arrival of the XR3, which borrowed the Golf’s approach.

RS2000s are keenly sought-after and here we have a quick Escort fresh from a fastidious restoration process. One of the last Mk2s built, the photographs attest to the level of detail and quality of the work. For lovers of fast Fords, this is very tempting.

The joy of any fast Ford lies in how cleverly the firm evolved its standard family cars into something much more esoteric. The Mk2 RS2000’s calling card is of course that shovel-nosed ‘droop snoot’, a popular styling quirk of the mid 70s that transforms the two door Escort profile into something all together more purposeful. Black paint and bumpers and smart RS alloys complete the simple yet highly effective picture.

This car has just received a comprehensive restoration that has covered the interior, exterior and structure. The photographs, particularly those of the underside, attest to the quality and extent of this work. The level of detail is impressive and includes a full interior retrim in correct fabrics. It is as close to buying a brand new example as it is surely possible to get.

The light, agile Escort never needed huge power to compete with bigger machines yet the torquey, proven Pinto 2litre certainly delivered. Allied to a slick 4spd gearbox, RS2000 drivers experienced a level of engagement and sure-footed, rear-drive handling that Golf buyers could only dream of.

This car has received a full mechanical overhaul including rebuilding the engine, gearbox and rear axle. With few miles since that work it comes to the buyer effectively ‘box fresh.’
