Highlights
- A very smart and solid looking example
- Benefits from nearly £5,000 spent in 2018 with a VW specialist
- Four berth, right hand drive, two litre version
The Appeal
Building on the success of the split-screen, series 1 versions, the “bay window” T2 was slightly bigger and more sophisticated in many respects. The engine was bigger too with a 1.6L flat-four, and later a more powerful still 2.0L sitting out under the rear hatch.
These fun and flexible vehicles very quickly built a huge and loyal following as daily transport, campers, day vans and commercial vans. This Devon Moonraker conversion is considered amongst the best available thanks to the full-length pop-up roof and the quality of the workmanship and materials.
The History and Paperwork
- First registered in November 1979
- Devon Conversion
- Little is known about the camper’s early life
- Very few miles have been covered in the last few years
- Some paperwork is on hand including the current V5
- Some information on the work carried out by Westcoast VW in 2018
- This work was extensive and amounted to nearly £5,000
- Historic Vehicle and as such is MOT and VED exempt
- Benefits from a LEZ and ULEZ exemption
The Interior
- Largely original, four berth interior
- Fridge, stainless steel sink and cabin heating are all present
- unused awning is also included
This Volkswagen's interior is in very good order and appears to be remarkably original. The front seats appear to be the factory items and are covered in velour and vinyl in contrasting browns. The vendor reports that they are in good condition besides a small hole in the driver’s seat squab.
In the rear living quarters, four berths are provided by a lower rock and roll bed and a further sliding bed in the roof. An occasional folding single seat is also fitted. We understand that the appliances have not been tested during their ownership.
The brown and beige checked seat upholstery in the rear cabin is charmingly of its period and seems to be in good overall condition. In true Devon style, every part of the interior is utilised to provide a comfortable and practical environment. There is plenty of flexibility on offer and a surprising amount of space once the large, pop-up roof is deployed.

The Exterior
- White / Marino Yellow
- Louvered vent windows
- Extensive attention to the bodywork and a professional respray in 2018
Anyone who is familiar with Type 2 Volkswagens will be aware that corrosion is almost an inevitability. However, we are glad to report that the bodywork on this example has been subject to extensive renovation.
Westcoast VW addressed this T2's bodywork and gave it a fresh coat of white / Marino Yellow paintwork. While the vendor points out that there are a few cosmetic imperfections here and there, this is a really smart example which appears very straight. The underside too, is really clean and tidy, commensurate with the little use the vehicle has had since the 2018 renovation work.
The steel wheels are fitted with the familiar domed, chrome wheel trims. These all appear to be in good condition, with the tyres being newly fitted in 2018. Panel gaps all appear to be fairly even, and the large sliding door was repaired and recommissioned during its 2018 overhaul.

The Mechanics
- Flat 4 'pancake' engine
- Stainless-steel exhaust
- Aftermarket selectable electric power steering
We are informed that the camper starts, drives and stops with no faults the vendor is aware of.
Given that the camper has covered very few miles since its 2018 recommissioning, the vendor suggests a good general checking over should be carried out before putting it back into regular use.
Fitted with the twin carburettor, 2-litre variant of Volkswagen's flat-four boxer engine, this Type 2 performs well, especially compared to many of its predecessors. The engine compartment is especially clean and tidy and we observe that the high quality paint job continues within, even in the places you rarely see.
The paperwork attests to some engine work and servicing being undertaken and we can see that it has been fitted with a new stainless-steel exhaust system.
We understand that selectable electric power steering has also been fitted to this camper, which is a very sensible upgrade. As a result it is much easier to manoeuvre at slow speeds, making this a far more usable vehicle as a result.

Summary
As the UK’s longest established VW camper conversion specialists, Devon has a well-deserved reputation for quality.
This particular example looks to be in a really good and useable condition. Following a thorough, post-storage check over this is an example that is likely to deliver many happy memories and is sure to turn heads wherever it goes.
