Highlights
- Great project potential as a highly original survivor
- Matching engine and frame numbers
- Very well preserved in the vendor’s garage for 26 years
The Appeal
A mainstay of the Triumph range from 1959 and once more part of today’s Triumph range, the Bonneville is without doubt amongst the most important motorcycles of all time. Triumph had their sights set on the American market and the Bonneville proved immensely popular stateside.
Here we have a 1979 UK supplied Bonneville that has lain dormant in the vendor’s garage for the past 26 years. Before parking it up, the vendor fitted a new front brake master cylinder and brake hoses, replaced the clutch lever and cable and fitted new HT leads.
The bike was started and run successfully about a year ago but will of course need a good going over before it can hit the road once more.
The History and Paperwork
- Parked up for 26 years in the vendor’s garage
- V5C present
- Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
The Condition
- For a bike that’s been laid up for the last 26 years, this Triumph is in a great state of preservation
- Looks likely to be complete, very original and unrestored
- Most of the paintwork is in pretty good shape and should clean up well with some effort
- The frame looks to be straight and free from any serious corrosion
- There’s some pitting to the chrome work and the tank badges which is to be expected
- The speedometer looks like its suffering from some internal condensation
- Some perishable rubber components will require replacement
- The seat upholstery is in really nice condition
The Mechanics
- Air-cooled 750cc parallel twin cylinder
- Before parking it up, the vendor fitted a new front brake master cylinder and brake hoses, replaced the clutch lever and cable and fitted new HT leads
- The engine was run around a year ago but no attempt has been made to ride the bike
- We notice some slight corrosion to the engine casings, but this is in no way excessive
- Naturally, a thorough inspection of the mechanicals and some maintenance will be required before this motorcycle can be used on the road
Summary
The Triumph Bonneville is a must-have in any collection of British motorcycles.
If you’re after a recommissioning project, or else want to embark on a full restoration, this Triumph would be a great starting point.
