1979 Land Rover 109 Pick up LHD

Highlights

  • Impressive long-wheelbase pickup
  • Highly extensive restoration job with a complete photographic record
  • Period condition throughout

The Appeal

Rugged, tactile - and utterly iconic. The Land Rover is still one of the most legendary British cars is history, with their boxy aesthetics, simple mechanics and utilitarian ethos making the off-roader an essential for many organisations and businesses across the world. Over 440,000 of these were built from 1971 to 1985, with bodies ranging from the two-door, the four-door and, of course, the pickup.
This 1979 pickup has been subject to an impeccable, wide-spanning restoration and renovation, leading to a simply superb example, and a very rare opportunity for any enthusiast.

The History and Paperwork

  • Sadly, we know very little about the history of this car
  • Left-hand drive example, built for the European market
  • Restored by the vendor in 2022 to an exceptional standard
  • The vendor reports this included over 2,000 replacement rivets
  • Currently indicates 45,813km on a five-figure odometer
  • Sadly we can’t verify this as an authentic mileage

The Interior

  • Restored interior
  • Impressive period condition with black vinyl seats and tactile instruments
  • Solid floors protected by the original rubber mats
Restored to an exceptional order, this period interior is a great looker. The Land Rover by nature is a utilitarian vehicle, with not much on display in the way of luxury - black vinyl seats, rubber mats and a tactile dashboard are all very much your lot, and for our part, create a very characterful interior.
The vinyl seats are completely retrimmed and in excellent order, with no rips or tears and only the slightest surface marks or creases. The dashboard is clean and well-kept, fully restored with the original instruments clean and nicely presented, with the vendor reporting that it’s all in really good working order.
The car’s array is completed with a Mountney Classic branded steering wheel, which is in very good condition, and the floors are protected by the original rubber mats - sitting atop restored, and completely solid floor pans.

The Exterior

  • Fully restored, reshaped and repainted
  • Rust repaired and treated leading to a superb example
  • Full new set of tyres
Even the most detailed inspection of this Series III makes it very clear that this is a superb example. The entire pickup has been stripped down to bare metal, reformed, repaired and refinished - resulting in a simply superb, Pastel Green Rover that’s loaded with character.
As you’d expect, it’s in fine fettle throughout, with each panel smoothed of corrosion, blistering and dents, and the paintwork fresh and bright. Save the original, slightly worn branding, you’d be forgiven for thinking this 109 has done very little travelling since built.
The glasswork, chromework, lenses and trims are all in good order, with occasional spots of wear where original components have been used. The car is sitting on contrasting cream wheels, which are in good order and shod with a new set of tyres.
The rear bed is excellent, looking very clean and solid with a spare proudly on display. Underneath, it’s all in fine fettle - with the odd bit of very light surface discolouration but not a single sign of corrosion or damage we can spot. The rear cross member is a complete replacement.

The Mechanics

  • Fully rebuilt 2286cc I4 diesel engine
  • 4-speed manual main transmission
  • Mechanical power steering
Fully overhauled, the engine of this 109 looks in fine fettle. It’s working exactly as you’d expect with no surprises. We’ve no reports of any mechanical faults, and over the course of the restoration the car has had:
  • Complete engine overhaul with new distribution
  • Newly assembled braking system including master cylinder, servo, pipes, shoes etc
  • Total injection overhaul with restored pumps and injectors
  • Replacement of plugs and pump timing gear
  • Complete electrical overhaul and rewire
  • Mechanical power steering assembled and installed to a high standard
The result is a solid, perhaps even nearly-new example of an utterly fantastic period pick-up, which the vendor informs us is in superb working order, ready and waiting to return to the road.

Summary

Beautifully finished, it’s rare that a Series III comes to us in such fabulous order, cossetted and restored like the essential pieces of motoring heritage they are. We’re sure this beautiful retro classic will garner plenty of interest.
