The Appeal
Anyone with an interest in superbikes will be aware that Honda is frequently credited with inventing the class when it launched the CB750 in 1969. The CB750 was a revelation, being fast, affordable and very rider-friendly, and for a time it was Honda’s flagship. If that was good, just think how great the excitement was when Honda followed it up in 1978 with a dohc 1000cc inline-six, the CBX.
The motorcycling press went into a frenzy. The estimable L. J. K. Setright loved it. Cycle magazine gushed with praise, naming it “a breakthrough for the Japanese motorcycle industry” while Cycle Guide went so far as to call it “the Vincent Black Shadow of 1979”. It was the first bike tested by Cycle World to exceed 130mph – truly ground-breaking stuff. However, the early ones are the ones to go for. By 1981, the CBX had extra weight to carry and was detuned, losing five horsepower in total. In the 1970s, though, it was truly unbeatable.
This handsome early example would be the ideal one to have. The vendor has previously fully restored a number of CB750s to concours standard and, while this CBX has only had a cosmetic restoration, it could still easily be a show-winner. We are advised that the engine and gearbox are in excellent working order, and the engine benefits from a rebuilt carburettor. CBXs don’t come up for sale often, and certainly not ones as good as this – you’d be wise to place some bids, because it’ll be a long time before you find another one.
The History and Paperwork
- The Honda was imported from the USA, and has been registered with a single UK owner since
- The vendor has conducted a full cosmetic restoration, and completed whatever mechanical work was needed to make the bike roadworthy
- The bike is sold with its current V5
The Condition
- In immaculate showroom condition following restoration
- Beautifully finished in candy red paint with bright coach lines
- Wheels, seat and brightwork all outstandingly good
If you’ve seen the vendor’s previous restorations, you’ll know that his finished bikes have one thing in common: they all look like they’ve just rolled straight out of the Honda factory. He is an extremely skilled and exacting restorer, and it would not be an overstatement to say that his projects are likely concours winners.
This CBX, of course, is every bit as good as all his others have been. The candy paint is immaculate, with all the correct decals applied as per 1979 factory specification. The wheels, seat and brightwork have been tidied up and renovated as necessary, and now make a strong contribution to the ‘like new’ look of the bike.
Even the engine is presented as if it had never been run. From the pictures, we can’t see a single greasy mark anywhere, so we’re sure every care has been taken to finish this CBX to the highest possible standard.
The Mechanics
- Engine and gearbox said to be functioning extremely well
- Carburettors fully overhauled by specialist CBX Carbs
- 26,579 miles believed to be genuine
Like we said before, we’ve seen this vendor’s previous restorations and know that when he does a job, he does it to the standards the Honda factory would have set, or else better. This restoration wasn’t quite as involved as some of his previous ones as the CBX has not been subjected to a full mechanical rebuild, but as a one-owner bike with a believed-genuine odometer reading of only 26,500 miles, we can think of no reason why it should have needed one.
We should think all the engine and gearbox internals are very well-preserved, and we are inclined to trust the judgment of the vendor when he says everything functions exactly as it should. He did send the carburettors away to be overhauled by a specialist, CBX Carbs, and we have no doubt that if anything else had been required, he would have seen to it.
While there is no record of the bike having been MoTed post-2005, we would expect this bike to pass a test with flying colours. While it is now MoT-exempt, we do advise bidders to satisfy themselves as to its roadworthiness before venturing onto a public highway, but it should be apparent from the photographs that it has been very well assembled. The engine is virtually spotless and the exhaust pipes show no discolouration, so we think we can say that the vendor has left no stone unturned.
The Summary
The Honda CBX was really the king of motorbikes when it was launched in 1978, and its excellent engineering and astounding performance made it an object of desire for everyone from long-term motorcyclists to day-dreaming teenagers.
Amazingly, this CBX is almost like a brand-new one. Having received a full cosmetic restoration, it now looks showroom-fresh, and having covered only 26,500 miles over the course of its life, it’s still in very good mechanical shape. If you want to experience one of the most thrilling road bikes ever made, this is the one to have. Likewise, if you collect superbikes or Japanese bikes, this could be the jewel in your collection’s crown.
