The Attractions
French car manufacturers, and Citroën in particular, were never too keen on following the rules.
In the 1950s France still had numerous possessions in North Africa, and so it became necessary to produce a four-wheel-drive car that was also at home on difficult desert routes. The 2CV, which already showed remarkable off-road capabilities in its standard version, was an excellent candidate. But developing a normal four-wheel-drive system for this small front-wheel-drive car would have been very complex, so Citroën decided to solve the problem in a completely different way, by adding an additional engine in the boot to move the rear wheels independently.
Incredible as it may seem, this unconventional approach paid off, and the 2CV Sahara proved capable of tackling even the most difficult terrain. This Dyane 6 was converted to Bi-Motor specifications in the 1980s by an authorised Citroën specialist. The conversion was expertly carried out, as can be seen in the photographs, and we are told that the system works well, allowing the rear engine to be started and stopped when desired.
In recent years, this Dyane has received a high level of restoration. The chassis has been replaced, the bodywork has been restored and a new canvas roof has been installed. It is in excellent condition both inside and out, and comes with Contrôle Technique valid until November 2026.
