Highlights

  • Largely original van with Westfalia interior
  • Pop top sleeper roof
  • Original UK right-hand drive example
  • Has spent a portion of it's life in Spain

The Appeal

The very personification of the phrase “cult classic”.
The Volkswagen T2, affectionately known as the bay window van stands proudly as what must be one of the most instantly recognisable and loveable vehicles to have ever graced the world's roads. Simple, robust and a sign of love and freedom across the globe, these no nonsense vans are a tool synonymous with adventure and fun. Exceptional versatility meant these T2s left the factory in a variety of forms to suit all sorts of needs, but perhaps the most popular, and recogniseable has to be the camper van.
There were of course many companies that performed camper conversions on these vans but the most prominent and desirable are arguably Westfalia. With Volkswagen contracting the German outfit to convert and fit out the vans directly from the factory.
This 1978 Westfalia presents prospective buyers with an interesting opportunity to acquire a highly original, impressively complete later T2, that holds excellent potential as a project van for the right motivated individual. Backed by a wealth of enthusiast support and parts supply, PUC 560R  longs to see a life of open road adventures at the hands of a new loving owner.

  • Selection of invoices and service history from both the van’s time in Spain and the UK
  • Both tax and MOT exempt due to the van’s age and historic status
  • UK registered with V5 registration document present

The Interior

  • Genuine Westfalia camper interior
  • Stands in wholly presentable form but could benefit from a light refresh in places if the van is to be restored
  • In largely original form with what we understand to be the original Westfalia fixtures and fittings
  • Period correct colour scheme with green cream and beige upholstery used throughout. A real eye catcher
  • High quality wood cabinetry used throughout, exceptionally well preserved
  • Westfalia stamping still present within the cabin
  • Headlining around the pop top roof opening has become detached in places
  • Pop top roof has no covering or upholstery on the inside so will need to be refinished, however it opens and closes with ease
  • Good quality higher backed green and cream seating in the front of the cabin, in good clean form with minimal signs of wear or patina
  • High quality black dash panel and adjoining switchgear, impressively well preserved and presented
  • Sony radio head unit

  • The van has rusted in places, most notably the sill sections and will require some bodywork attention to be brought up to standard
  • Minor areas of scabbing and smaller blemishing to be seen in areas of the bodywork
  • Glass work appears to be of a good high quality
  • Holds excellent potential as a summer restoration project

The Mechanics

  • Fitted with the now legendary rear mounted, air cooled, flat four engine
  • Engine and surrounding engine bay present nicely in good honest form
  • A spell of inactivity means the van’s battery is a little flat, however once powered up, the van fires into life comfortably and with ease, settling into a comfortable idle
  • Four speed manual gearbox in good overall order
  • Backed by a wealth of enthusiast knowledge and good parts supply
  • Electric hook up point resides in the engine bay of the van
  • Leisure battery system has been fitted to power ay auxiliary features
  • Underside and floor pans look to be clean however the sills will require some attention

Summary

Day by day these VW campers become more and more sought after. It is becoming all the more difficult to find good quality examples, and therefore it is a welcome sight to see this charming, interesting T2 come up for auction.
With a quality Westfalia interior setup, this 1978 van longs for a committed enthusiast to revitalise it and bring it up to the standard it deserves. With a solid level of parts supply here in the UK, this van presents as a wonderful candidate for a restoration throughout the current summer months.
