1978 Volkswagen Type 2 Bay Window Pick up

Highlights

  • Fitted with a 1641cc twin-port flat-four with dual-carburettors
  • Right-hand drive South African import
  • Desirable single cab pickup configuration

The Appeal

As well as forming the basis of many a campervan conversion, the Volkswagen Type 2 was destined to be used for a number of commercial applications and one such useful configuration was the single cab pickup truck. The slab-fronted Type 2 with its engine neatly tucked low down in the chassis maximised load space and distanced the engine’s noise and fumes from the occupants.
Here we have a very presentable and quite original 1978 South African import in right-hand drive. Commercial variants of Type 2 Volkswagens invariably get worked quite hard, making smart survivors such as this rather challenging to find. Rich in patina, although still in very good overall condition, this is certainly one to consider.

The History and Paperwork

  • Imported from South Africa in 2020
  • V5C present
  • Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
  • Bidders should note that the V5C records the engine size as 1600cc but a 1641cc unit has recently been fitted in its place
  • Factory right-hand drive
  • KMH speedometer
  • The odometer displays 58,586 kilometres – we’re unable to verify whether this is correct as little is known of this Volkswagen’s South African history
  • Stored inside, unused for the past 18 months

The Interior

  • Basic, utilitarian and mostly original
  • Equipped with an aftermarket diesel-fuelled cabin heater
  • Red vinyl door cards exhibit some rich patination
  • Seat upholstery and headlining in chequered cloth
  • Some signs of general wear to the upholstery with some small holes and abrasions
  • The carpeting appears in reasonably good order
  • Equipped with a Pioneer DIN stereo
  • The vendor comments that besides lights and wipers, there’s little else in the way of electrical equipment
  • Overall, a usable interior in good condition for its age

The Exterior

  • Bright and attractive yellow paintwork with some nice patination in places
  • Remarkably straight bodywork for a commercial vehicle
  • Hinged bed sides and tailgate make for a versatile load space
  • The chassis rails and outriggers appear fundamentally solid, with a little surface rust
  • The vendor points out some paint bubbling caused by corrosion around the lower bodywork
  • We’re informed that the vehicle is very sound overall, with no serious structural corrosion
  • The floor pans seem in good order
  • The bumpers exhibit some slight age related damage but the chromework looks really good
  • The steel wheels present well and are shod with Continental tyres
  • All the glass and light lenses look to be in good shape

The Mechanics

  • Uprated 1641cc twin-port flat-four with dual-carburettors
  • The engine was fitted shortly before the vehicle was put into storage, reportedly only covering around ten miles before
  • Running and driving but reportedly in need of tuning and setting up correctly
  • The entire fuel system is apparently brand new and was fitted at the same time as the uprated engine
  • Besides the upgraded engine, the four-speed gearbox and the remainder of the drivetrain reportedly remain standard
  • Presents well inside the engine compartment

Summary

It isn’t often we see Type 2 Volkswagen commercial vehicles and the single cab pickup is a particular favourite of ours. Right-hand drive examples are relatively rare, so don’t miss this presentable example.
