The Appeal
The VW T2 Camper is an icon of contemporary culture representing the free spirit and a sense of liberty. They exist in all shapes, sizes, colours and styles which makes them all the more adored by the world over.
This model left the factory in 1978 and has since resided with the same family in the French Alps having been passed down from father to son. It is entirely furnished in the Westfalia style with much of the cabinet work being completed by its original owner.
Featuring all the amenities one would expect from a modern camping car, this 1978 model certainly stands out. It is kitted out with solar panels and electric outlets, a gas hob, fridge and sink. The exterior is joyfully covered in patina and the interior is plush and in great condition. Surely this has to be the perfect model for travelling the continent, especially given it runs brilliantly for long periods of time.

The Interior
- Full Westfalia style furnishing
- Will sleep a family of four
- Many modern amenities
The interior of this lovely VW Camper is certainly its strong suit. It was fully kitted out in Westfalia style by its original owner. The furniture was all built by the original owner and is still standing strong and looking great to this day. They house a gas hob, sink and many electrical plugs are available throughout. Finally, the wood floor was recently refitted by the current owner.
The whole thing is powered by a recently replaced solar panel on the roof and an equally fresh battery. This should make for great comfort even on the longer trips away from home.
Speaking of comfort, a large foldable double bed lies at the rearmost end of the van and a further bed features in the pop top roof. In total, this T2 sleeps a comfortable three adults or family of four. A full party will travel in full safety as well following the recent fitment of full body seat belts in the front and some lap belts on the rear bench.
Up front, the leather seats look good, as do the driving controls. Brown leather door cards show very minimal signs of wear and the black plastic dashboard looks very presentable. Pioneer speakers are dotted around the cabin and connect to a JVC head unit. Finally, the headlining all looks very secure and clean finishing off what is clearly a very nice interior.
The Exterior
- Work recently done to the bodywork and chassis
- Brand new solar panel
- Lots of patina throughout the bodywork
The current owner informs us that recently the van has had some repair work done to the body and chassis. This means that everything should be very solid and healthy in good condition. However, it does mean that the paint work has suffered having never been resprayed.
One can spot signs of peeling and cracking throughout the orange paintwork whilst blotches of fresher paint cover up the recent work. The white roof however was redone following the inclusion of the new solar panel. This makes for a two-tone design that truly looks stunning out in the open.
Chrome details such as wing mirrors and badges all present nicely whilst the wheels fitted to the car are perfectly presentable despite some small scuff marks. The van’s original set of wheels is also included with the sale although they will need new tyres, currently featuring non-legal studded examples.
As aforementioned, the underside looks very clean with just some spots of repair and protection visible. Elsewhere, the window seals look like they have seen better days.
The Mechanics
- Original 1.6-litre four-cylinder boxer engine
- Runs well for long periods of time
Under the floor at the rear of the camper sits the original 1.6-litre boxer engine with which it left the factory. In the last few years, it has received plenty of work from replaced lines and seals to new electric starter parts. In fact, the engine bay looks very good with very few signs of leakage both within and underneath.
This is backed up by the owner’s claims that it runs very well and can do so for extended periods of time. This should make those long drives through the mountains easy and pleasant.
In addition, recent invoices show that over €2,000 have been spent on the vehicle’s underpinnings over the past few years. These cover engine maintenance, the brake system and electrics. This T2, in classis car registration comes with a government technical inspection certificate valid until July 2028 so the new owner will not have to worry.
Summary
Having spent much of its life travelling through the French Alps on trips, this 1978 VW T2 proves it is a capable machine and is ready to run for extended periods of time. The exterior may be a sign of age with plenty of paint cracking and peeling throughout the bodywork. But the interior is a pleasant and comfortable place to be ready for a new family. This little van will open up the world to its new lucky owners.
