THE APPEAL

The Triumph Stag is probably one of the most easily recognised classic cars on the road. Some say there hasn’t really been another 4 door convertible made that can match the exquisite design penned by the Italian master car designer Giovanni Michelotti.
The shape of the Triumph Stag is so distinctive it’s ingrained into the public consciousness. The car itself had quite a short production run of 25,000 made between 1970 and 1978.
The Stag got a warm welcome at the various international auto shows in 1970. In the UK, the Stag was an immediate success for Triumph with a 12-month waiting list rapidly being established and cars changing hands at well above list price.
There were some build quality issues when the car first rolled off the production line. Overheating engines was the main complaint because of blocked cooling systems, but thankfully these were rectified well before the end of production. All that was needed was a few upgrades to the cooling system , clutch and engine rebalancing.
This Stag going to auction would have had none of those issues in production and to ensure everything works well, the engine, cooling system and clutch were all upgraded in the extensive rebuild back in 2016.
In fact, it’s hard to see anything on this car that hasn’t either been totally refurbished or replaced, rubbers, pipes, fittings are all gleaming. Dare we say that this car is far superior to when it first rolled off the production line?

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Fully restored in 2016 at a cost of over £20,000
  • CD of over 150 images from the complete body and mechanical restoration work done in 2016

  • UK registered car residing in Northern Ireland
  • UKV5C present
  • The milage of 30,605 appears correct matching the old MOT’s

  • Custom made plywood top for the boot makes the platform very sturdy
  • Full size spare 5 spoke alloy Stag wheel in the boot
  • Door cards, chrome handles and elastic pockets are original and in great shape
  • The drivers door handle needs a tighten as there is a slight movement when opening the door
  • Carpets as new
  • Working heater for those colder days
  • Working cigarette lighter to fit charges and phones to

  • All brightwork and rubbers removed prior to painting
  • The car comes with the hard top which has the heated glass rear screen and full headliner intact
  • The hard top wasn’t resprayed and is a slightly darker colour red than the car. There are small patches that might require a bit of attention where the paint has flaked on the edges

  • Original mudflaps secure
  • The inner areas of the wheel arches look to be in excellent order
  • The hardtop roof is in spotless original condition
  • The vendor states the chrome work is all original and in excellent shape. Parts could have been re-chromed but if they have, they blend perfectly

THE MECHANICALS

  • This car has had any issues from manufacture rectified and reliability is said to be exceptional

  • The vendor tells us that the gearbox is smooth and the overdrive works well, kicking in just as it should
  • The clutch pedal is light and responsive

  • A lot of attention has been given to the underside of the car, with many new components and weather protection

SUMMARY

There’s no doubt about it, the Triumph Stag holds a cult car status. It’s not often we come across an example that had had such a thorough and comprehensive recommissioning as this and it is a real joy to behold. Every aspect of the car has been adorned with love and attention.
The vendor, who is sad to see it go, knows of no reported issues with the car. It starts on the button, ticks over beautifully and drives even better.
There is a huge following of enthusiasts and fewer good examples such as this on the market, so interest is always high.
According to the main UK enthusiast club approximately 8,500 Stags are believed to survive in the United Kingdom. Choose from a good number of clubs and specialist suppliers for help and advice and you will never be on your own with a Triumph Stag. Even popping to the shops could entail lengthy enjoyable conversations about the car.
With just three previous owners, this car has been meticulously cared for over the years, with money being no object keeping it in a factory fresh condition since it's total restoration/refurbishment in 2016 and it’s now ready for its next great adventure, will you be driving it there?
