1978 Triumph Bonneville T140

Highlights

  • 1970s British icon
  • Original specification
  • Some patina but overall in good condition
  • Motorcycle enthusiast owned

The Appeal

The Triumph Bonneville is probably one of the most recognised names from the Triumph lineup throughout the 1960s, 1970s and into the 1980s. This particular bike is a 1978 model, which is the second generation Bonneville using the larger 750cc engine.
This is the perfect motorcycle for anyone wanting a well-known British bike which they can tinker with in the garage, giving it the final fettle before opening it up on the roads once again. 95% there with a service, indicator lens and a spot of fresh petrol; the vendor believes the Bonneville will be ready to be enjoyed.

The History and Paperwork

  • V5 is present
  • Imported from America
  • Registered in the UK 28th April 1998
  • Declared manufactured 1978
  • Two previous UK keepers

The Condition

  • Recently out of long-term storage
  • Black and red colour scheme looks to be in good condition
  • The chrome work is in nice condition with just a small amount of tarnishing and pitting  in places
  • The mileage is thought to be all that has been covered since a restoration several years ago
  • There is a crack in one indicator lens, but these are relatively easy items to buy and easy to replace
  • Some condensation is present inside the headlight, but behind the glass, the reflector looks in good condition
  • The rear light is in good order with no splits to the lens
  • The original seat is in good condition with no damage; the Triumph lettering has faded a small amount

The Mechanics

  • 750cc Air-cooled Parallel twin cylinder
  • Goodridge braided brake hoses
  • Twin Amal carburettors
  • Five-speed gearbox
  • There is some light tarnishing to the engine and gearbox casings, but nothing excessive
  • The tubular frame looks in good order, with no signs of corrosion
  • The chrome exhaust is in excellent condition and has a bright tarnish free finish
  • There is some surface rust on the disc brakes, which would clean off
  • A small amount of tarnishing is present on what are thought to be the original wheels
  • Dunlop Roadmaster tyres are fitted, which have a good amount of tread, but there are some signs of cracking to the sidewalls
  • The vendor reports the bike was running fine before going into storage, but a recent knee operation prevents him from starting it
  • Service and inspection of the bike would be recommended before it was ridden, purely because it has been standing

Summary

This 1978 model holds a lot of potential! With not much work, the Triumph Bonneville could soon be back up and running and capable of being used on a daily basis.
Once finished, the Bonneville 750cc will deliver a great riding experience, and you will have the pleasure of riding one of the most recognised models from the 1970s.
