The Appeal
Today the KZ1000 is beloved of cafe racers and restomodders, but its appeal was there from day one. In 1976, on its launch, Cycle World declared it the fastest stock bike it had ever tested.
So while the draw of modifying these great bikes is obvious, perhaps it takes an example like this one to remind us how good and how appealing the standard factory models are. It looks magnificent, its red paint and bright chromework oozing intent.
As a 1978 model it is fitted with the 83bhp ‘AE’ version of the 1,015cc engine. It was restored around 20 years ago and has been very sparingly used and preserved since, as the photographs show. Regularly maintained and equipped with a long, advisory-free MOT - even though this is not legally required - this is a fantastic example of an iconic bike that is rare to find in this condition.
