The Appeal

Its chiselled looks were a firm departure from what went before and influenced a generation of GTs and coupes. The 365 GT4 evolved into the 400 when the sinuous V12 got bigger - now 4.8L and 340bhp - and the interior received a makeover.
More changes arrived with the new car in the form of Ferrari’s first automatic. It proved to be a wise choice, its effortless cog shuffling suiting the 400’s louche demeanour. These were cars for the rich and glitterati, which likely explains why just 355 400A Automatics left the works over three years. Just 137 of them were RHD models like this one.
This UK market car has passed through a mere six keepers in its long life and amassed less than 68,000 miles. In recent years it has been in long-term storage but we understand that it starts and runs albeit with a few fluid leaks, sticky brakes, etc. so a full recommissioning would be required before returning to the public highway.
It is finished in classic red, which appears to be an older restoration that included colour coding the bumpers and fitting clear light lenses used on the later 400i. The interior was retrimmed some years ago and looks fetching in black with grey inserts, a light patina of age adding an extra hint of character.
Due to the limited recent use the car may require a check over before hitting the road. The 400A is one of the rarest and prettiest Ferrari GTs of recent years and project cars like this do not come along often.
