1978 Ferrari 400 GT

***Images supplied by vendor***

Vendor will handle all necessary export documents and deliver to SA port if required

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Lovely original spec 400 GT
  • Last of the front engined carb cars Ferrari made
  • Desirable manual transmission
  • Discreet Blu Scurro paint

THE APPEAL

Sports GTs don’t get any more evocative of the 1970s than the Ferrari 400, a wedge-shaped, Pinninfarina-styled V12 coupe with pop-up headlamps. The last carburettor-engined front-mounted V12 Ferrari, there are few cars as cool when it comes to evoking their era and it remains a magnificent way to cover long distances.

One of only 147 built to this specification, this example has spent its life in a dry climate and is reported to be in great mechanical health. It would be the perfect addition to any Ferrari collection, or a great way of involving the family in high-end automotive events.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Dry climate car currently in South Africa
  • Left-hand-drive
  • 105,000km from new
  • Ferrari service books and document wallet
  • The seller has advised will do the necessary export documentation and deliver the car to the port

THE INTERIOR

  • Cream leather with black inserts
  • Blue deep pile carpets
  • Smart and immaculately presented
  • Leather-trimmed sports steering wheel
  • Smart wood veneers
  • Genuine four-seater

The 2+2 layout makes the 400 a genuine four-seater with more generous rear legroom than most 2+2s of its era.
It’s extremely smart inside, with very well-presented cream leather and sporty black inserts.

Wear is minimal, while the chrome gear lever with perfectly round back knob gives a hint towards the racing cars that made Ferrari famous.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Very smart example
  • Dry climate car
  • Rare Blu Scurro paint
  • Five spoke alloys

The Blu Scurro paint on the 400 is so dark it almost appears black. It really suits the angular lines of the wedge-shaped Ferrari.
This is a dry climate car that has spent most of its life in South Africa and its condition reflects that.

It presents well with no signs of damage or paint bleaching and is a truly imposing car.

THE MECHANICS

  • 4.8 V12
  • Blistering performance for its era
  • Five-speed manual gearbox

The 335bhp naturally aspirated 4.8-Litre 24v quad-cam V12 is one of Ferrari’s best engines and gives lively performance, accelerating the carb-fed 400 GT from 0-60mph in a shade over six seconds and on to a maximum speed of 152 mph – decent figures even by today’s standards.
The vendor reports that it drives without fault and is in good mechanical health, having been well-serviced.

SUMMARY

A great example of a 1970s oddity – the four-seater Ferrari that couldn’t be any more cool if it tried - which looks fantastic inside and out.
