1977 Yamaha XS650

Highlights

  • Excellent condition throughout
  • Two year restoration recently completed
  • Very original and collectable
  • US Import

The Appeal

Imported from the USA in 2015 and the subject of a very extensive and thorough renovation over a two-year period from 2018, this is a lovely example of one of Yamaha’s finest big twins from the 1970’s.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in USA in 1977
  • Imported to UK in 2015
  • Extensive renovation between 2018-2020
  • Detailed breakdown of restoration
  • Genuine Yamaha parts used
  • MOT exempt
  • V5c present
  • 1 key
  • Workshop manual
In 2016 the bike was completely stripped down to its frame which was then powder coated along with the swinging arm, headlight, fork yokes, centre and side stands, air box, engine plates, battery carrier and chain guard.
The original alloy rims were rebuilt with new stainless-steel spokes and nipples, and the exhaust system, kick-start, suspension springs and shrouds were all re-chromed.
The renovation didn’t stop there either, there was a new tank sourced and every moving part was either fully reconditioned or replaced, as you can see from the accompanying list of parts and works that you’ll find below in the gallery.
The result is clear to see, with the bike being kept as original as possible, featuring a period fork brace and the correct and genuine luggage rack.
For the past 2 years the current owner has used the bike sparingly, but regularly, during his ownership, and enjoyed trouble-free riding.

The Condition

  • Excellent condition
  • Renovated to a very high standard
  • Low recorded mileage
The big twin Yamaha presents itself extremely well on all fronts, with only the odd item like the indicators and fuel flap showing any real sign of its true age.
Rebuilt over a two-year period with a real eye for detail, quality and originality the whole bike is in great overall condition with its polished engine cases and newly powder coated items all looking very nice indeed.
The speedometer shows an indicated 11,473 miles only but with no paperwork to substantiate its mileage on importation, this may, or not, be genuine.

The Mechanics

  • Bulletproof Yamaha 650cc twin
  • Excellent condition
  • As good as it gets
There’s no service history with this bike but that really doesn’t matter, as its recent thorough rebuild means that we’re looking at a bike that is effectively almost new, with its every part having been replaced or renovated.
The engine is reported to run smoothly and as it should, with its last service being done in 2020, but with very few miles done since.

The Summary

A great slice of Yamaha motorcycling history, lovingly restored from the ground up, featuring that great 650cc twin that delivers handfuls of useful torque in any gear, making it a great cruising or touring classic motorcycle.
