1977 Triumph T140V Bonneville

Highlights

  • Comprehensive new mechanical items
  • Very original condition
  • 750cc parallel twin mated to a 5-speed Quaife-designed gearbox

The Appeal

In its various iterations, the Bonneville has got to be one of the most well regarded motorcycles of all time. While the essential formula remained unchanged for a number of years, in reaction to competition from Japanese marques during the early ‘70s, Triumph gave the Bonneville more power and longer legged gearing. This very original 1977 example benefits from a 750cc parallel twin and a 5-speed gearbox.
The styling was also subtly updated and even to the uninitiated, this bike is unashamedly ‘70s. With its liberal use of chrome and a beefy aesthetic, you could definitely consider the T140V to be one of the forefathers of today’s ‘urban scrambler’.

The History and Paperwork

  • Imported to the UK and first registered in 2016
  • Historic road tax and MOT status
  • A great deal of work has been recently completed
  • V5C present
  • Old MOT certificates
  • Age related plate

The Condition

  • Appears very original
  • New rear indicators
  • Pleasing level of patination
This Bonneville is clearly in very good condition and appears to be very original. All the painted elements including the tank and frame are very smart and we were unable to detect any signs of corrosion or damage. The seat has some good age to it, without being damaged, and we like how the Triumph motif has gently faded over time.
The chrome work wears a slightly heavier degree of patination although the ‘5 speed’ graphic on the rear mudguard suggests that it may well be the original finish. The wheels are both in good order and we were unable to detect any signs of corrosion or pitting. The tyres appear to be in very good order and have quite an aggressive tread pattern which give this Triumph a very purposeful look.
The vendor informs us that the Lucas indicators have recently been replaced and so are in good working order.

The Mechanics

  • Recently overhauled with many new parts
  • Starts, runs and rides really well
The vendor informs us that this bike has recently received a number of new parts which include:
  • Two new Amal carburettors
  • New oil pump
  • New clutch and friction plates
  • New bearings
  • Battery replaced
  • New alternator
  • New starter motor
  • Rotor arm replaced
  • New cables and brake pipes
  • New coils
  • Electronic ignition system
  • Two new air filters
Following the fitment of all these new parts, we understand that the bike runs and rides as Triumph originally intended. With its torquey engine and comparatively small size by modern standards, it is very well suited to urban settings but equally the 5-speed gearbox gives this Triumph the legs to be enjoyed on long trips.

Summary

A fantastic example of an iconic motorcycle, this Bonneville really isn’t one to be missed. Its versatility really shines through and we see this as a classic bike that could be used almost anywhere on a regular basis.
