The Appeal
The automobile has come a long way in the past 100 years or so since we started seeing them appear on the roads but to this day, few innovations have proved quite so joyous as the V8 engine and the convertible roadster. Combine the two and throw a little of Michelotti’s styling into the mix and what you have is the Triumph Stag.
Here we have a delightful 1977 example that has had a great deal of attention and expenditure lavished upon it in recent years. Resprayed to a very high standard in Tahiti Blue, with a new soft top roof, fixtures and fittings, this Triumph is a particularly fine specimen that is ready to embark upon its next adventure.
The History and Paperwork
- 9 owners from new
- Stored in a humidity controlled tent
- MOT valid until July 2023 although exempt
- Numerous invoices for parts and servicing
- Owner’s manuals present
- Collection of old MOT certificates
- V5C present
- Restoration work carried out over the past 10 years and by the present owner
The Interior
- Tan seats exhibit little wear
- Recent new carpets
- Everything works
This Stag’s tan interior exudes ‘70s style with textured infills to the seats and a smattering of wood grain across the dashboard and centre console. A very sporting wood-rimmed steering wheel is fitted and in very good condition and indeed there is very little wear to any of the controls.
The seats are in great shape with no significant wear or any damage to report and the same goes for the matching door cards which present really well. The vendor informs us that the carpeting was replaced recently and it looks to be in very good condition inside the cabin and boot. In the footwells, the carpets are protected with overmats which also look smart.
The dashboard is free from cracking and the wood veneer fascias appear in great shape. A modern Sony stereo and Garmin satellite navigation unit are discreetly fitted although the remaining switchgear and instrumentation is original and reportedly in full working order.
The Exterior
- Tahiti Blue paintwork resprayed to a high standard
- New bumpers and badges
- New soft top and original hardtop also supplied
The vendor informs us that the car has been repainted to a very high standard and it certainly presents very well. As the car has been stored in a humidity controlled tent, the paint remains in great condition as do the vinyl stripes down the sides. The bodywork is really smart, appearing very straight down the sides and with good panel fitment.
The bumpers and badges have also been replaced so are in excellent condition with no signs of damage or deterioration we could see. The hardtop matches the Tahiti blue bodywork and looks to be in very good condition. The vendor informs us that the blue soft top is also new and we can see that the back window is clear and the roof mechanism operates smoothly.
It sits upon period-correct Stag 5-spoke alloy wheels and the vendor informs us that the tyres are new.
In order to ensure this Triumph remains as smart as it is, an all weather outside car cover is included with the car.
The Mechanics
- 3.0-litre Triumph V8
- Uprated expansion tank and cooling fan
- Very smart engine compartment
Under the bonnet, this is without doubt one of the smartest Triumph Stags you will see and great attention has clearly been paid to the finer details. The vendor points out an uprated cooling fan and an aluminium expansion tank which help make that Triumph V8 reliable.
It starts, runs and drives really well with ample power and plenty of acceleration. The automatic gearbox changes gear smoothly and is eager to kick down when required. The vendor informs us that there is no smoke or indeed any untoward noises while driving, resulting in this being a great example to use and enjoy.
Summary
The Triumph Stag is amongst the best looking ‘70s roadsters around and with a V8 engine under the bonnet, they’re amongst the best to drive as well. This charming 1977 car has been looked after exceedingly well and as a result is a particularly fine example that would make a great addition to any collection.
