1977 Triumph Dolomite Sprint

Highlights

  • Older restoration in stand-out red
  • Good history including Sprint specialists
  • Tidy and unmodified late model car
  • One of Britain’s most capable sporting saloons

The Appeal

The Dolly Sprint deserves more praise and attention. In a world not dominated by the Golf GTI and its hot hatch ilk we’d be praising the innovation and ability of this last hurrah for Triumph, the purveyor of the finest sporting saloons.
Because the Sprint was good, very good. 127bhp from its clever 16 valve slant four trounced any hot hatch while the crisp Michelotti-trimmed styling and wood-trimmed interior nudge it a more rarified world.
Enthusiasts known all this, of course. They already revere cars like this one, a late model, factory-standard Sprint in stand-out red. Neat details like the alloy wheels - it was the first car to offer them as standard - and the vinyl roof appeal, and that’s before you clock the classic interior.
This car is an older restoration that a Sprint specialist in the 1990s extensively maintained. It has been regularly but sparingly used since so arrives on the market in very tidy, unmodified condition. The Sprint is surely one of British motoring’s best sporting saloons, a genuinely entertaining driver’s car. And this one looks tempting.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 29th July 1977
  • Dolomite VA prefix confirms that this is a genuine Sprint
  • 15 registered keepers
  • Previously red which was changed to yellow then back to red in 1991
  • Current long term keeper since July 2016
  • Original factory handbooks, paperwork and wallet
  • Good history file including old MOTs and invoices to verify mileage
  • Extensive work by Sprint specialist in 1990s including engine work
  • Workshop manual
  • There is no MOT history but the car is MOT and tax exempt due to Historic status

The Condition

  • Older restoration in red with paintwork and panelwork remaining in good order
  • Tidy exterior with complete chromework and lights all well kept
  • Sits on factory correct five spoke alloy wheels, also in good order
  • Tyres appear to be in good condition with plenty of tread
  • Original factory-fitted vinyl roof in good order with folding Webasto-style sunroof
  • Underside shows evidence of repairs, some of which buyers may wish to note in photos
  • Standard and unmodified interior in very well kept condition
  • Fabric seats have good finish but show inevitable light fading of age
  • Cabin fittings including wood veneers appear original and with only light patination
  • Three spoke leather-rimmed factory steering wheel with light tarnish to alloy spokes

The Mechanics

  • 1,998cc 16V slant four Triumph engine delivering 127bhp
  • 4spd manual gearbox with overdrive
  • Stainless steel exhaust with single exit pipe
  • Mechanical overhaul in mid 90s by Sprint specialist
  • No reported running or driving issues to advise
