The Appeal
Japan’s Mustang performed a neat trick. It looked a lot like America’s pony car yet it was built better and achieved similar performance from a smaller, far more economical engine. No surprise that it launched seven generations of Toyota sports coupes, culminating in cars that dominated world rallying.
Survivors are exceptionally rare which makes this 1977 2.2L GT a proper treat for collections. It is in remarkable timewarp condition inside and out - the tan vinyl cabin, with its array of sports dials, veneer trim and period details including an original Toyota radio/cassette is particularly impressive.
The car arrived in the UK from the USA in 2023 and has been with the same keeper ever since. The low displayed mileage could be correct based on the condition and originality. The car is fitted with the 90bhp 2,183cc 4cyl engine - which was as powerful as a Mustang’s V6 at the time - and is standard except for uprated carburettor and spark plug leads.
Described as in good running condition, this is a very tidy car with the added bonus that you’re unlikely to park next to another one at a show.
