The Appeal
Of all the Fiat 500s - and there’s quite a number - there are few so desirable as Autobianchi’s take on the iconic little car. Upgrading the supermini into a compact little Station Wagon, it was a perfect option for light commercials - with the car’s beloved characteristics still in situ.
Highly original, this example has been through a comprehensive mechanical overhaul, and is now ready and waiting for a light cosmetic restoration to really bring it up to winning standards.
The History and Paperwork
- First registered in 1977
- 4 previous owners
- Undergone plenty of mechanical work
- Indicates 59,981 kilometers on a five-figure odometer
- However, while we can’t verify this as authentic mileage, the car has covered less than 800km since 2001
- Current ITV until March 2025
- Paperwork file includes:
- Original 1977 registration documents
- Original Carta Di Circolazione
- ITV document and record
The Interior
- Attractive - if simplistic - interior with black vinyl upholstery
- Dashboard is painted metal with only scant instrumentation
- All original instruments are in good order with no reported issues
- Vinyl seats and door cards show some wear throughout
- Some patina to the front seat bolsters, with a small cut on the driver’s backrest
- Door cards are somewhat warped but free of rips and tears
- “Frunk” space in good order complete with spare wheel
- Rear luggage bay in good order with some wear
- We note the boot lining on the rear of the passenger seats is coming loose
The Exterior
- Bodywork in good order with some light signs of wear
- Still carrying its original Rosso paintwork
- Paint is worn, with some touch-ups visible
- We note a lot of texturing to the sills and lower doors
- This is likely to signify some corrosion that may need treatment
- Slight fading to the rear of the roof and upper tailgate
- Lenses and glasswork are in good order with no major faults
- The indicator lights on the front have been given new, orange lenses
- The branding is present and correct with no issues to report
- Car is sitting on its original wheels, which show some wear
- Full set of tyres that appear to have good treads
- From what we can see underneath, the car shows some corrosion, but nothing of major concern
The Mechanics
- Powered by a 499cc straight-2 engine, giving 17.5hp
- 4-speed manual transmission
- Engine bay is in good order with only minor signs of wear
- Recent mechanical work includes:
- Fuel system restoration
- Carburettor overhaul
- New condenser
- New spark plugs
- New engine oil and air filters
- General overhaul of brakes with new cylinders and front and rear brake shoes
- Complete overhaul of wiring
- Car is reportedly working exactly as expected, with no faults to report
Summary
A more utility-friendly variant of the beloved Italian ‘Bambino’, this Fiat is a great candidate for some cosmetic work, and makes for a superb ambassador for those simple, but effective mechanical specs.
