Highlights
- Late series III model
- 7450cc Chevrolet V8
- Two owner car
The Appeal
Designed by US industrialist Brook Stevens the Excalibur series was his take on the Mercedes-Benz 500 SSK from the 1930’s, hence the vintage styling. The series III model was produced in 2 and 4 seater versions, around 400 were produced powered by a Chevrolet detuned 7.4 litre V8.
The History & paperwork
This car is unique in that it has only had two owners, the first a member of the Abu Dhabi Royal family who had this Excalibur in his private collection. The car only covered 3680 km before being displayed in a motor showroom, the vehicle was then imported by the next keeper to the UK back in 1991 where he used it extensively for road trips in the UK and Europe.
The car comes with an A4 box file charting its history, this includes paperwork from the original purchase through to the import papers when it came to the UK. Several receipts are included which cover parts purchased and servicing at independent garages.
Sadly the registered keeper has passed away and friends of the family are now selling the vehicle on their behalf.
The car recently failed an MOT on a nearside front indicator not working and an inoperative windscreen washer, these should be items that can be fixed easily.
The Interior
- Four seater
- 3 speed automatic gearbox
- hardtop to alternate looks
The car has held up well in terms of the black leather seats, showing very little wear. The base of the front seats padding has sagged slightly but all stitching and materials are free of marks. The rear seats are in very good condition, as are the floor carpets which are finished in black to compliments the seating and the factory fitted hardtop.
The cars wooden style inlays around the gear lever are cracked, the instrument cluster surrounds are in good condition and the array of various switches all appear to be in working order. There is wear on the stalks and also on the leather steering wheel but all operational and does not detract from the overall feel of quality inside the cabin.
The addition of the large black trunk is your portable boot area and this is clean and includes some tools and spares. There is also a hidden isolator switch fitted.
The Exterior
- Convertible soft top or hard top
- Paintwork in good order
This car has two different looks in one, the addition of the black fibre glass hard top turns it in to a tourer, take the top off and you have a four seater roadster. The cars paintwork looks very good, there are a couple of touch ins around the near side front wheel spat and a small paint run that is by the off side rear corner (all shown in the gallery).
The tyres are all in good health as are the two spares, covered up by the white covers that sit neatly on either side of the car giving it a characterful look. The hard top has some blemishes on it and two repairs have been done on the rear screen.
In addition to the hard top the side screens are supplied and are in very good condition, these again transform the look of the car. A tonneau cover is also included, this is in excellent condition and shows very little use.
The Mechanics
- 7450cc Chevrolet V8 engine
- Extensive overhaul July 2018
The previous owner was an engineer so maintained the car himself, with a vast array of receipts included the car has only had genuine parts fitted through many specialists.
In July 2018 the car had an extensive overhaul of the brakes and other items that were needed to replace sue to general wear and tear. The car does not come with a current MOT due to a fail but these are two minor items.
Summary
The Excalibur is a unique car, whether you enjoy it like the previous owner on road trips, car shows where it will surely be the stand out of the event or like the idea of hiring it out as a wedding car this will always put a smile on your face, especially with that V8 muscle car soundtrack.
