1976 Volkswagen T2 Bay Window Campervan

Highlights

  • Californian import that has since been converted to UK electrics
  • Refitted interior and overhauled mechanicals
  • Desirable 2.0-litre ‘pancake’ engine

The Appeal

The Type 2 Volkswagen is without doubt the quintessential campervan. This 1976 Bay Window was imported from sunny California and first hit UK roads in August 2013.
The vendor informs us that since arriving, this Volkswagen has received an interior refit, converting the electrical systems to be compatible with British campsites. It is fitted with the desirable 2.0-litre pancake engine, providing this Type 2 with more power than its predecessors.
It is presented in good, usable condition both inside and out. If you’re planning your holidays for next summer, consider taking this lovely Volkswagen along for the ride.

The History and Paperwork

  • MOT valid until July 2023 (all eligible for MOT and road tax exemption)
  • V5C present
  • Small collection of invoices for work and servicing
  • Californian import
  • First UK registered on 8th August 2013
  • Has spent the last four years in storage

The Interior

  • The vendor informs us that the van has been subject to some retrimming work
  • Much of the camper conversion looks to be of the period
  • Sink, dual gas hobs and toploader refrigerator fitted
  • Throughout the vehicle, the seats look to have been reupholstered at some point
  • The cabinetry certainly looks to be of the period and is in really good shape for its age
  • The curtains appear to be recent additions, as does the laminate flooring
  • The rear roof lining panel is starting to sag
  • Up front, the dashboard is in good shape and a modern Pioneer stereo is fitted
  • Little wear evident to the controls
  • The door cards present well and match the remaining upholstery
  • Overall, this is a really smart interior and with a little tidying in places, it will be ready for your next camping adventure

The Exterior

  • The white paintwork presents well and we like how understated it is
  • We love the slatted roof rack, it’s a great period accessory and a practical addition
  • It appears remarkably straight down the sides with good door fit and panel gaps
  • There is a little corrosion starting to appear in the lower bodywork but this does not look to be excessive at present
  • The painted bumpers have survived really well
  • The seams all look in good order, as does the roof guttering
  • Underneath, there is some corrosion in places but nothing looks to pose any immediate structural concerns
  • The heater pipe has had some insulation installed to improve its efficiency
  • The chrome work would benefit from some attention as the handles are flaking and one of the headlamp ring appears damaged
  • Behind the sliding door, the there is a small dent although repair should be fairly straightforward as this panel can be removed
  • As a US-spec vehicle, it has indicator repeaters on the doors
  • External flue vent
  • Heated rear window
  • The wheels are in good order and the tyres look in fair condition

The Mechanics

  • 2.0-litre ‘pancake’ engine fitted with a single carburettor
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • The vendor informs us that it has received a mechanical overhaul and some of the work is detailed in the invoices which accompany the van
  • We’re informed that it runs and drives really well with no faults to report
  • Clean and tidy under the engine hatch

Summary

This is a really good example of the enduringly popular Type 2 Volkswagen Bay Window.

If you fancy a camping holiday next summer, this is certainly a great way to go about it.
