1976 Triumph Stag

Highlights

  • Near Immaculate condition all over
  • Restored by the renowned Paul McLaughlin at Stag Classics
  • All mechanicals new or renewed

The Appeal

Triumph released the Stag in 1970 as a 2+2 sports tourer with styling from Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti, who claims fame to some Ferrari’s, Maserati’s and Lancia’s of the era.
By the time 1970 rolled around, the Stag was 2 years late. Being fashionably late however, didn’t dampen British spirit around the car and there was a 12-month waiting list in place for orders with car’s being exchanged for well above list price.
This car has undergone a body and mechanical restoration which has resulted in a very high quality, finished car ready for its new owner.

The History and Paperwork

The Stag comes with a huge folder of paperwork, miscellaneous invoices and owners club magazines documenting a large portion of the car’s life. It also comes with a Stag by Triumph book and a service passport in a plastic wallet as well as a V5 and the box for the stereo currently in the car.
The full restoration was carried out by the renowned Paul McLaughlin from Stag Classics, a well-known name in Triumph Stag circles. If his work on this car is anything to go by then it’s not hard to see why he is such a trusted name.
Coming with one set of keys, the Stag also has an immobiliser and alarm for increased security should you want to leave the car anywhere at some point.

The Interior

Fully reworked and retrimmed, the interior is a striking red vinyl, offsetting the Old English White paintwork it certainly is a statement piece and one that suits the look of the Stag down to the ground.
You’d be hard pressed to find anything amiss here and to add to the stunning looking interior, the seats are comfortable whilst also holding you in place. A perfect match for the Stag’s grand touring capabilities then.
The dash is wood effect, and all the dials and switches are reported to be working, the Kenwood DAB stereo is a much-needed modern accessory which does not stick out like a sore thumb.
A retractable roof is one of the Stag’s many appealing factors and this one is brand new from the restoration. Putting it up and down is as easy as a newly fitted roof can be on a
Stag and when you’ve coerced the beautiful matching red fabric roof into place it sits tight and holds a good shape. Putting it down and neatly tucking it away leaves you with miles of head room and gives the car a change of personality as you can much more readily hear the roar of that V8.

The Exterior

A freshly restored shell means you have a clean shell with fresh paint, it even comes with new car smell. There are very little, if any marks, stone chips, or flaws of any note around the body, and the chrome and badges finish it off nicely.
The wheels are in good condition too, with 4 new tyres to see you stick to the road. All light lenses are new and free from marks or scratches, but the glass is reportedly original as apparently, it’s a difficult item to replace. As such there is a small scratch on the driver’s side door window but if that’s the only blemish on this otherwise wonderfully executed car then that’s not going to keep you up at night.
A great colour scheme, a correctly finished body with tight and uniform shut lines, Stag Classics have given this Stag a great new start and it looks stunning for it.

The Mechanics

No need to worry about poor maintenance or a previous owner neglecting routine fluid changes here, the mechanicals have been overhauled in line with the rest of the restoration. A rebuilt Triumph engine and gearbox along with a rebuilt differential join an all-new suspension and braking system meaning it starts fresh and all those worries from back in the 70’s can simply melt away.
To add to that, the cooling system is all new and has also been upgraded, there’s also electronic ignition to go with the alarm and immobiliser as well as an uprated carburettor to improve breathing.
All that’s left to do then is take the car on a grand tour to make the most of this set up, perhaps a ferry ticket to France should be the first purchase after the winning bid.

Summary

A superbly well finished restoration of a much-loved classic by a renowned and trusted name in the game. A full body and mechanical restoration with everything either refurbished or replaced with new where available means the Stag comes wrapper fresh ready for its next 47 years on the road.
