The Appeal

The Mercedes-Benz SL posed a problem for Britain's sports car manufacturers. Here was a beautifully engineered, stylish roadster that was frankly leagues ahead of anything else on the market. Triumph wasn't content to play second fiddle any longer, so it came up with the Stag in 1970 - a mightily impressive W113/R107 SL alternative.

A 2+2 sports tourer with styling from Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti, who claims fame to some Ferrari’s, Maserati’s and Lancia’s of the era, the Stag was an exceedingly handsome car. To match the SL, it needed a suitably powerful engine, and that came in the form of the 3.0-litre V8 of Triumph's own design.

We're delighted to offer this 1976 example which may well be among the finest Stags remaining in the UK. Expertly restored by well-regarded specialist Stag Classics and dry-stored in a dehumidified garage, it's impeccably presented both cosmetically and mechanically.

No road tax or MOT testing is required as this is now classed as an historic vehicle, but the vendor has submitted the car for MOT testing and it comes with an advisory-free ticket for peace of mind. They also commissioned a hand-made hard top for the car (at great expense), as sourcing well-persevered original items is quite challenging.
A superbly well-finished restoration of a much-loved classic by a renowned and trusted name in the game. A full body and mechanical restoration with everything either refurbished or replaced with new where available means the Stag comes near-showroom-fresh fresh ready for its next 48 years on the road.

The History and Paperwork

  • Accompanied by a substantial and carefully curated history file
  • Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
  • Voluntarily MOT tested by the vendor
  • Stored in the vendor's de-humidified garage and driven very sparingly
  • Please note that the car is currently assigned a private registration but will revert back to 'NUV 268P' as shown in the photographs
The Stag comes with a huge folder of paperwork, miscellaneous invoices and owners club magazines documenting a large portion of the car’s life. It also comes with a Stag by Triumph book and a service passport in a plastic wallet as well as a V5 and the box for the stereo currently in the car.
The full restoration was carried out by the renowned Paul McLaughlin from Stag Classics, a well-known name in Triumph Stag circles. If his work on this car is anything to go by then it’s not hard to see why he is such a trusted name.
The Stag also has an immobiliser and alarm for increased security.

The Condition

  • Restored to an excellent standard throughout
  • The vendor has commissioned a brand-new hard top
  • Satellite navigation unit recent fitted
  • No signs of notable wear, damage or any deterioration to report
A freshly restored shell means you have a clean shell with fresh paint, it even comes with new car smell. There are very little, if any marks, stone chips, or flaws of any note around the body, and the chrome and badges finish it off nicely.
The wheels are in good condition too, with 4 new tyres to see you stick to the road. All light lenses are new and free from marks or scratches, while the glass is reportedly original. As such there is a small scratch on the driver’s side door window but if that’s the only blemish on this otherwise wonderfully executed car then that’s not going to keep you up at night.
A great colour scheme, a correctly finished body with tight and uniform shut lines, Stag Classics have given this Stag a great new start and it looks stunning for it.
Fully reworked and retrimmed, the interior is a striking red vinyl, offsetting the Old English White paintwork it certainly is a statement piece and one that suits the look of the Stag down to the ground.
You’d be hard pressed to find anything amiss here and to add to the stunning looking interior, the seats are comfortable whilst also holding you in place. A perfect match for the Stag’s grand touring capabilities then.
The dash is wood effect, and all the dials and switches are reported to be working, the Kenwood DAB stereo is a much-needed modern accessory which does not stick out like a sore thumb.
A retractable roof is one of the Stag’s many appealing factors and this one is brand new from the restoration. Putting it up and down is as easy as a newly fitted roof can be on a
Stag and when you’ve coerced the beautiful matching red fabric roof into place it sits tight and holds a good shape. Putting it down and neatly tucking it away leaves you with miles of head room and gives the car a change of personality as you can much more readily hear the roar of that V8.

The vendor has also commissioned a brand-new hard top from a Triumph Stag specialist. This cost around £4,000 and is beautifully made.

The Mechanics

  • 3.0-litre Triumph V8
  • Three-speed automatic gearbox
  • Impeccably presented engine compartment
  • The vendor states that the drivetrain is effectively "as new" - such was the extent of the restoration work
No need to worry about poor maintenance or a previous owner neglecting routine fluid changes here, the mechanicals have been overhauled in line with the rest of the restoration. A rebuilt Triumph engine and gearbox along with a rebuilt differential join an all-new suspension and braking system meaning it starts fresh and all those worries from back in the '70s can simply melt away.
To add to that, the cooling system is all new and has also been upgraded, there’s also electronic ignition to go with the alarm and immobiliser as well as an uprated carburettor to improve performance.

The vendor comments: "The motor is especially smooth and delivers more power and   performance improved" - a vast improvement over the original setup.
All that’s left to do then is take the car on a grand tour to make the most of this set up, perhaps a ferry ticket to the Continent should be the first purchase after the winning bid.
