1976 Range Rover Carmichael 6 Wheel Conversion

Highlights

  • Very rare Carmichael conversion with 9ft pick-up bed
  • Versatile 4x4 with MOT to December 2023
  • Based on a 1976 D Suffix Range Rover
  • Resprayed and equipped with a 300TDi Discovery diesel engine
  • MOT and tax exempt

The Appeal

While Land Rover was making the original Range Rover progressively more luxurious, another company was busy taking the original go-anywhere SUV in another, entirely different, direction.
In the 1970s Carmichael developed the 6-wheel Range Rover in a variety of body styles. They were primarily for commercial duties as fire tenders or rescue vehicles, but some of the 400 built were sold for private use.
This 1976 Range Rover combines those two disparate directions - it is based on the more luxurious Suffix D Range Rover and is one of the few Carmichael conversions. Little is known of its early history but it has been resprayed in Land Rover Green and equipped with a Discovery 300Tdi engine, R380 gearbox and LT230 transfer box. Solid and presentable it is not just a rare opportunity to acquire an interesting part of Land Rover, but a very versatile 4x4 too.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered on 7th December 1976
  • Suffix D Range Rovers got improved carburettors, interior lighting and carpeting
  • This Range Rover has clearly been evolved in a more utilitarian direction and does not have those fittings
  • We are told that there is some service history with this vehicle
  • Unfortunately we were unable to trace the details of the Carmichael conversion
  • Owned by the vendor since 16th April 2014
  • Resprayed during the vendor’s tenure in Land Rover Green
  • Fitted with a Land Rover Discovery 300TDi engine
  • New fuel tank recently fitted

The Interior

  • Converted to two-seat configuration and retrimmed in red vinyl with tartan inserts
  • An interesting mixture of original and refurbished components
  • This is clearly a working vehicle but in a good state of preservation
  • Original hard plastic dashboard in good conditions with no cracks
  • Complete instrumentation, including auxiliary dials, in presentable condition
  • New red seatbelts recently fitted
  • Rubber floor mats
  • Stylish headlining consists of varnished wooden slats with carpet trim
  • Original three spoke Range Rover steering wheel in good condition with clear centre boss
  • Wooden gear knob
  • Period correct radio/cassette system
  • Beige door cards appear to be original and in fair condition
  • Speaker on driver’s door has a broken grille
  • Original Range Rover ‘R’ branded pedals
  • Headlining behind sun visors is in poor condition
  • Side steps fitted

The Exterior

  • Vast Carmichael 6 wheeled conversion with huge 9ft rear deck with caging
  • We understand that it has been recently resprayed in Land Rover Green with black roof
  • Bonnet side vents fitted
  • Respray is reasonable quality with some areas of paint flaking to note in photographs
  • Bodywork is generally presentable but with various areas of early deterioration to note
  • Attending to some of the small areas of early corrosion would likely reap dividends in terms of long term condition
  • Later body colour bumpers in good condition
  • Small blemish on front nearside wing, poor paint on base of nearside front arch and bubble of rust on nearside rear arch
  • Steps riveted into bodywork on offside rear arch
  • Paint cracked and showing blue paint under on scuttle
  • Inside edges of bonnet beginning to show signs of corrosion and exterior shows some areas of flaking paint
  • Both doors show signs of corrosion on the edges and inside base
  • Exterior trim is complete and generally presentable but would benefit from a localised clean
  • Lights in good condition except nearside rear corner which is partially missing and nearside headlight shows some deterioration at base
  • Mixture of tyres fitted including Goodyear and Bridgestone
  • Painted 16in body colour three spoke Land Rover wheels in good condition
  • Underside shows various signs of surface corrosion and would benefit from cleaning and undersealing
  • However there were no structural advisories on the last MOT test

The Mechanics

  • 2,495cc Land Rover Discovery 300TDi diesel engine
  • R380 Discovery manual five speed gearbox
  • Durable Land Rover LT230 transfer box
  • New fuel tank recently fitted
  • Last MOT contained advisories for an offside rear tyre and indicated weak springs on the offside of the vehicle

Summary

The Carmichael conversions turned the go-anywhere Range Rover into an even more versatile vehicle, servicing fires and rescues as well as providing distinctive wheels for private buyers.
This unusual pick up Carmichael offers the buyer a wealth of possibilities. Whether as a carry-anything load lugger or talking point at shows, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a fascinating Range Rover in solid condition with lengthy MOT.
