The Appeal
German motorcycle manufacturer Maico is best known for its competition success during the 1970s and this 1976 MC400AW is a prime example from the marques golden era.
The restoration of this matching numbers bike was overseen by the current owner and it is presented for sale in fantastic order, having been comprehensively rebuilt from the ground up.
While not road registered, this Maico is ready to be enjoyed in the off-road setting of your choice, or else would make for a simply wonderful display piece.
The History and Paperwork
- Mechanically and cosmetically restored
- Photographs of restoration process
- Not road registered
The Condition
- Restored to original specification
- Complete and ready to be used
The vendor informs us that when they acquired this Maico it was in a very sorry state. Since then, the vendor has had it fully restored by MB Motorcycles and today this bike looks as good as it once did.
The frame has been expertly painted, as have all of the yellow components which really look stunning. This bike retains its purposeful stance - a full rebuild of the front end ensures that it retains every inch of suspension travel it left the factory with.
The seat, which was formerly made almost entirely of black tape, is now resplendent with a new vinyl cover. The chromework also appears to be in good order, with no signs of corrosion or any blemishes we could see. We are informed that the aggressive off-road tyres are new.
This Maico could as readily be pressed into action as it could go on display. The vendor informs us that the quality of the restoration is such that this bike is usable and handsome in equal measure.
The Mechanics
- Matching numbers
- Restored
- 400cc two-stroke engine
We understand that the engine and gearbox have both been fully rebuilt and the vendor has a number of photographs to corroborate this.
As a result, the bike strikes up easily, emitting a distinctive two-stroke burble and a little smoke from the exhaust. The vendor informs us that it rides exceptionally well, with plenty of power and enviable handling.
We understand that this bike wants for nothing and is ready to be used.
Summary
Lovingly restored to a very high standard, this Maico is a true collectors item and a fascinating conversation piece.
It is a capable motorcycle which the next owner can have confidence in and use as the manufacturer intended.
