The Appeal
This is a wonderful example of a genuine low miles Honda CB400F in excellent, unmolested original condition. It has been dry stored for an extended period of time and has covered very few miles in the past 10 years. This brilliant bike is a real time capsule, and is unusual to find one in such original condition. A very small amount of presale maintenance has been carried out to ensure the bike is in good running condition for the next keeper.
The History and Paperwork
- Old style V5 present.
- This fine machine has been dry stored since 2011, and has only covered a few miles in the past 12 years.
- A few small items of maintenance work have been carried out to re-commission it and return it to running order.
- Very nice collection of documentation including numerous previous tax discs, an owners handbook, original service booklet with a number of stamps, lots of original MOT certificates and more.
The Condition
- This wonderful motorcycle is presented in a very original condition, and has never been restored.
- It is very nicely preserved overall, and appears to retain almost if not all original components.
- The gorgeous navy blue painted tank is in amazing condition, bearing the sublime 70’s red on gold Honda and “Super Sport” branding. The air filter side covers also feature the same sublime blue paint and “400 Four” emblems. This paintwork is in exceptional condition for the age.
- The lovely large chrome tank cap is in stunning condition.
- The motorcycle has a gentle patina throughout, with all brightwork and aluminium showing light corrosion.
- The motorcycle features a single right side mirror which is in good shape.
- The black leather saddle is in great condition with no tears or major blemishes, and features the Honda logo across the back.
- All of the gauges and lighting lenses appear to be free of damage and are clean and well kept. There are some small blemishes to the black headlight pod, however these are not out of keeping with the overall condition of the bike and retain the bike originality and character.
- Even the hand controls are in good condition, with the red lettering clear and legible, with bikes of this age it is not uncommon to find such things very well worn.
- The rubber grips appear original as do the footpeg rubbers, and all are in great shape and very nicely presented on this complete original machine.
Overall this machine is a very complete and original example, presented in a light patina the bike would not take a lot of TLC to bring up to a truly stunning condition, with all of the original unmodified parts to boot.
The Mechanics
- On the mechanical side of things, the bike is in good shape, with no evidence of fork or shock leaks, with the fork stanchions being clean and well kept.
- The exhausts are in good shape with only some small rust flecks and the megaphone style end can is in equally good shape overall.
- The spokes and wheels have some corrosion present but are not severe.
- Bike starts first time on the button, having had the carbs rebuilt very recently to ensure they are clean and functioning correctly
- Another point of note is that the motorcycle has been fitted with a fresh battery, and as such will last the bike for many years to come.
- The tyres on the bike, while in good condition visually, and with plenty of tread left, are a number of years old, as such a fresh set of tyres would certainly be beneficial.
- An exceptional bike requiring only basic TLC to really bring it up to the next level.
Summary
A truly wonderful example of a very original, classic Japanese motorcycle. With this level of originality, this bike is a good investment candidate for any collection, as fewer and fewer bikes remain with this many original parts in good condition. Certainly an opportunity not to be missed.
