The Appeal
In the 1960s, Renault had carved out a new niche - the inexpensive, supermini hatchback had hit the market and quickly began dominating it for the family sector. Needless to say, other European manufacturers started taking notice, and began sketching out concepts to match what seemed like a brand new concept.
Audi's first product? The Audi 50. Bang up to date compared to many of its market rivals, the blocky hatchback carried a transversely mounted engine, an independent suspension and a three-door hatchback body with a folding rear seat - all in a compact, capable and agile little car that was competitively priced for the ever-evolving family market.
Originally delivered to Greece, this 1976 example has been sympathetically upgraded with a 1.6-Litre engine and brakes taken from a Golf GTi, alongside a sport suspension. The result is a car transformed into something altogether more powerful and charismatic, ready and waiting to prove itself for the lucky new keeper.
Restored and rebuilt around ten years ago, the car has been cherished and used largely for Regularity Events, with a consistent record of indoors storage. Decked out in racing seats, a roll cage and 13-inch Magnesium wheels, it's an eminently drivable, eminently capable classic that's loaded with character.
