The Appeal
A camper-converted Volkswagen Type 2 is among the most usable classics you can lay your hands on. You’ve only to venture onto a British motorway during the summer months and you’ll find many a Type 2 trucking along, laden with families, camping equipment and, more often than not, the odd surfboard. To many, they’re still the ultimate classic camper, and so we’re delighted to offer this 1975 Bay Window which sports a supremely practical Starlight Campers conversion.
Subject to extensive restoration in 2019 prior to current ownership, this van is in very good overall condition throughout. The interior is a particular highlight, as this van features an elevating roof, full awning modern cabinetry, convertible double bed and a raft of amenities which include a sink, microwave, refrigerator and ample storage space. There’s leisure battery system wired in, 240v electric hook-up, a CD/USB/radio sound system and there’s even a toilet included!
The History and Paperwork
- Acquired by the vendor in May 2023
- Restoration work carried out in 2019
- The history was unfortunately mislaid by a previous keeper during a house move
- Voluntarily MOT tested until recently
- Various invoices and MOT certificates are present
- 2,496 miles indicated - although the true figure is unknown
- The van has been in dry storage since October last year
- Van will be stored at a local location and can be viewed upon request
The Condition
- Twin roof rack set-up
- Supplied with a full all-weather cover, a full awning and a leisure battery hook-up cable for campsites
- Fitted with full inertia rear seat belts which can reportedly be removed easily if not required
- Complete with a double bed and elevating roof which extends completely and has no known defects
- Elevating roof, full awning modern cabinetry, convertible double bed and a raft of amenities which include a sink, microwave, refrigerator and ample storage space
- CD/USB/radio sound system
- Portable toilet
- Microwave included
- There are some minor imperfections to the bodywork, although it is commendably straight overall and no immediate work is required
- Very few signs of corrosion to the bodywork and underside and certainly nothing especially noteworthy
- The engine bay is immaculate with no rust areas for concern
- We’re informed that all replacement parts are genuine Volkswagen - even down to the door locks
- The van has also been fitted with Porsche wheels (no spare)
- Some remedial work which needs to be done on the driver's door sill and offside rear panel which has a small crack - neither prevent the van from being used for the summer but would benefit from attention once the season is over
The Mechanics
- 1.6-litre air-cooled flat-four
- Four-speed manual gearbox
- The vendor states that the van drives smoothly, “is very easy on the gear change and comfortable”
- Some minor repairs were taken care of last year including the fitment of a new starter motor, new accelerator cable and new fuel lines
- The gear lever was changed back to an original item - an EMPI quick change gear stick is still available if the new owner wants this although the vendor found it to be less usable
- The suspension has been professionally lowered using the standard rack system which can also be reversed with ease
