RESERVE LOWERED -1975 Triumph Stag MK2

Highlights

• Original 3.0 V8 engine
• Working overdrive
• Recent new soft top
• Large history file
• Minilite replica wheel & standard Stag

The Background

Aimed fairly and squarely at the Mercedes SL market of up market young executives, the Stag utilised an in house designed 3.0l V8 engine.
It was mated to either a four-speed manual gearbox with an overdrive option, or fully automatic.
With power steering, tinted glass, electric windows and adjustable steering column, it was very well equipped for a car of the early ‘70s.
It was intended to be a big seller into the American market but didn’t quite make the impression that was hoped for.
Very successful in Europe though, almost 26,000 cars were produced during it’s production run between 1969 & 1977.

The History

It is believed that this Stag was first registered in Reading Berks on the 12th of March 1975. Little is known of its early history until a letter in the history file from the TR Register, Grampian Region in 1998 indicates that it now resided in Scotland.
It would appear to remain North of the Border for a number of years before returning South to Yorkshire where we believe it remained up until very recently.
Purchased by the vendor only 2 months ago, an unexpected motorsport project has fallen in his direction leaving him short of time to enjoy the Stag.

Therefore, it’s prudent to pass it over to someone who can make best use of this very usable classic.
His wife loves it so I’m not sure she’ll be too pleased once she finds out ...

The Paperwork

There is a large history file accompanying this Stag, Mot’s, parts receipts and works carried out are all covered.
Please see in the photo’s a list of parts & works carried out since 1986 up to 2021, it is certainly extensive and there are receipts for most of this.
There is of course a V5c in the current owner’s name & a current Mot to June 2022.

Interior

The original interior appears to be in good condition, with very little wear to the seats, door cards and carpets apparent.
The dash again is believed to be original; it does have just a few very minor splits in the veneer, but this is common with cars of this age and adds a bit of character.
We’re told by the vendor that everything inside works as it should and shouldn’t need any attention.
Overall a great looking interior, which matches the exterior colour very well and should give many years of service for its new owner.

The Exterior

Finished in Carmine Red, this Stag does look rather good. Generally, the exterior is in a good sound condition with the paintwork gleaming for the photoshoot.
There are one or two areas which would benefit from a little improvement and further polishing but overall, this Stag presents very well.
It should be noted that the boot is a fibreglass replacement, so a new owner may wish to replace with an original item.  Sill covers are stainless and in great condition, finishing off this car very well.
The soft top is mohair and is believed to have been replaced about 5 years ago.
Currently fitted with Minilite replica wheels in gun metal grey, there are 5 original Stag wheels to go with the car, should the reserve be reached.

The Mechanics

When taken out for the photoshoot, the engine started easily and soon settled into a smooth tick over with no visible smoke from the exhaust.
It appeared to select gears when required and the overdrive kicked in as expected.
It has very recently been into a local expert for carb tuning and the vendor says it now runs much better and cleaner throughout the rev range.

The Appeal

The Stag represents everything which was great about life in the ‘70s. A very stylish car, the Stag is still just as relevant and usable today as it was when it was on the dealers’ forecourts.
There aren’t many sports cars which can whisk you away in style to the throbbing beat of a V8 engine and carry your luggage and golf clubs without any fuss. There’s even room in the back for passengers ………well provided they have short legs, but it’s possible. Maybe better for children or the dog though thinking about it, but still very practical if there’s more than two of you.
For us it’s that big V8 engine mated to a manual gearbox which wins us over to these timeless classics, always a star at classic shows, with a very strong owners’ group and spares back up, the Triumph Stag makes a lot of sense in the current market.
