1975 Triumph Stag ‘Mk. 2’

Highlights

  • Benefiting from a recent engine rebuild, including upgrades to cooling system, totalling near £13,000
  • Recent bare metal respray in /original colour of Carmine red with diamond cut refurbishment of alloy wheels
  • Recent interior retrim in charcoal leather with new carpet set

The Appeal

Making its celebrated debut in 1970, the Stag was a luxurious grand tourer penned by Giovanni Michelotti and built by Triumph with the intention of competing against the likes of contemporaries such as the Mercedes Benz SL.
This new high-end GT would require a suitably impressive powerplant and therefore Triumph concurrently developed their own new V8 engine for the Stag. The resulting engine would provide not only silky smooth power but also one of the very best burbling V8 soundtracks.
Unfortunately, the Stag did suffer some well-known reliability problems in its early days, with overheating being a significant issue. In the many years since its introduction however, these issues have become well understood and now a number of modifications exist to tackle these problems successfully.
The beautiful ‘Mk 2’ Carmine red example offered here is one such beneficiary of this type of work and was the subject of a full engine rebuild with cooling system modification back in 2019. This car also benefits from a recent full bare metal respray, new Mohair hood and interior retrim in black leather.
Consequently, now presenting in beautiful condition and with the mechanical upgrades to match, this Stag is ready to get back out into the wild!

  • Vendor reports ‘stacks and stacks’ of history and invoices provided with the car, including original sales invoice and service books
  • Invoice for reconditioned Borg Warner Model 35 Gearbox, April 2018, £850
  • Advert relating to past sale of car in 2017 to current owner, detailing: New Mohair hood, original wheels diamond cut with new tyres, Full bare metal repaint in original colour, bumpers re-chromed, Kenlowe fan fitted, stainless steel exhaust, auto gearbox recondition, electronic ignition, new carpets, and full service
  • Invoices from EJ Ward Engineers whilst in current ownership totalling near £13,000, relating to engine rebuild, cooling system upgrade and other mechanical work – as detailed in photographs

The Interior

  • Recent interior retrim in charcoal leather, presenting in excellent condition
  • Dashboard, gauges, and interior trim in lovely condition
  • Updated Alpine Bluetooth stereo system installed August 2018
  • Digital display relating to updated cooling system
  • Recently replaced carpets in excellent condition
The interior of this Stag presents very well, benefiting from a number of improvements but still managing to maintain an air of originality. The recent interior retrim in charcoal leather presents very nicely, as does the relatively new carpet set. The vendor reports the car also benefits from the installation of new seat belts.
The steering wheel, dashboard, and switchgear all present in complete and original condition and the vendor reports that everything is working as it should. The few upgrades which are notable, for example the digital cooling system display and updated Bluetooth stereo, are relatively unobtrusive and only serve to enhance the driving experience of this car.
As one would expect, the lining of the new Mohair hood is in excellent condition, and it also appears that the strengthening roll bar has also benefited from a retrim in new leather.

The Exterior

  • Stunning colour combination of black Mohair hood over Carmine Red body
  • Original 5-spoke alloy wheels in excellent condition shod in Firestone tyres with excellent tread
  • Bumpers benefiting from recent re-chroming
Following its fairly recent respray this Stag still presents in generally very good condition, having been always garaged by its present owner. On close inspection there is some evidence of mild stone chipping at the front end and additionally, the grill would perhaps benefit from a respray. A small paint chip is also noted at the front leading edge of the bonnet but apart from these small areas the paint and bodywork still present very favourably.
Looking at the external body of the car generally, there is no evidence of significant visible corrosion and following their recent refurbishment, the wheels also present very well.
The exterior is set off by the new black Mohair hood which presents very nicely and tucks neatly away into a clean looking storage area behind the rear seats.

The Mechanics

  • Documented substantial mechanical spend totalling near £13,000 by current owner
  • Known heating issues addressed by cooling system modifications
  • Reported by current owner to be running well without any overheating concerns
Looking through the photographed documentation for the car it’s clear that this car has not wanted for mechanical attention in the current owner’s hands.
Benefiting from a recent full engine rebuild with modification and improvement to its cooling system, this Stag is now reported to be in excellent running condition and performing its duties very well without any overheating concerns.
Looking underneath the car, all appears as it should with a good covering of underseal and no clear evidence of any significant corrosion.

Summary

The Stag truly is a beautifully styled luxury GT of the 1970s with an unmistakable V8 burble to match. The example offered here has benefited from substantial recent spending, improving both the appearance and underlying mechanics of the car. The result is a lovely sorted Stag ready to get out and roam!
