THE APPEAL
The MGB is one of the best-loved classic cars in the UK and for a very good reason. There are few other classics that enjoy such a brilliant amount of support through clubs and parts back-up, while they’re also sprightly and great fun to drive.
It was a formula so successful that the B enjoyed a 19-year production run and it enjoys a decent survival rate today.
This example is one of the ones that may not have survived were it not for the support the MGB has seen from specialists, as in 2007 it was built-up essentially from scratch into a British Motor Heritage Roadster body shell. It was also converted to chrome bumpers (from rubber) at the same time.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Restoration photo file
- Large file of invoices
- British Motor Heritage Certificate
- Restoration and ownership history
- UK V5
- Tax and MOT exempt
The B comes with a large history file detailing its restoration and re-shell, with copies of all bills and photographs. It also has a few old MOTs and invoices for prior work.
It has been part of a private collection for the past few years, having been purchased by an enthusiast to become part of an extensive collection. He’s now slimming down his substantial collection of classics cars as the storage space is required for business purposes, while he is also spending an increasing amount of time in California so can’t really use them.
The car has been maintained by his own mechanic, employed to look after his vehicles, who is handling the sale on his behalf.
THE INTERIOR
- Cream leather trim
- New carpets
- Modern stereo
- Mota-lita wood-rimmed wheel and gear knob
The B is in great condition inside, with excellent cream leather seats and matching door cards and carpets, all specified at the time of the car’s rebuild.
It has a modern-ish CD-radio and high-quality carpets and carpeted lower door trims. The period wooden Moto-Lita steering wheel is a particularly appealing touch.
THE EXTERIOR
- Flame Red
- KN Minotaur wheels
- Mohair three-window hood
- Heritage bodyshell
The MGB was built up from scratch, essentially, into a BMH Heritage Bodyshell, which is the most comprehensive way to restore a B.
It hasn’t really seen much use since, having covered less than 2,000 miles since 2007. The vendor has had it for over 10 years and has barely used it, but has ensured it has been kept in tip-top order and ready to go with his own mechanic.
There are no obvious flaws or blemishes with the car and the mohair hood is in excellent order.
THE MECHANICS
- 1.8 B-Series
- Electronic ignition and fuel pump
- Lead-free head
- Kenlowe fan
Having been kept in running order by a private mechanic, the MGB runs beautifully despite limited use in the past 15 years. It starts on the button, holds excellent oil pressure and runs sweetly, while the transmission engages all gears well.
There are several improvements, namely a Kenlowe cooling fan, an electronic ignition and an electric fuel pump, while an unleaded cylinder head was fitted at the time of the car’s assembly into its new bodyshell.
SUMMARY
This is a car that you can really make the most of – a re-shelled MGB Roadster that has had the vast majority of work it was ever going to need already carried out, albeit some years ago. It still looks terrific, has been dry-stored and it starts and runs beautifully. It’s a great opportunity to buy an MGB that’s ready to enjoy and make the most of straight away.
