- Very solid underneath thanks to previous high quality restoration
The Appeal
This is an exciting opportunity to purchase a previously restored classic MGB GT V8 that has had a lot of money spent both in the past and recently to bring the car up to its present very high standard.
The car presents very nicely throughout, with excellent body and paintwork, a renewed and restored interior, plus a reconditioned gearbox and recently tuned engine that performs very strongly. It’s also very solid underneath.
The History and Paperwork
- Supplied new to Moir & Baxter on March 14th Edinburgh in 1975
- 10 owners from new, one of which was for 34 years
- Colour changed from the original Harvest Gold to iconic Flamenco Red during a previous restoration
- Further recent restoration included an engine tune and gearbox rebuild for which invoices are present
- Dunlop composite wheels and black rubber bumpers are believed to be original to the car
- Featured in the MGOC magazine
- V5 log book present in the owner’s name
- Binder full of invoices for previous work and new parts
- Mileage is not genuine as the car has previously been restored
The Interior
- Black interior presents very nicely overall with the dashboard and centre console in very near-perfect condition
- New black leather sports recliner seats
- Carpets have recently been renewed throughout and are protected by MG-branded rubber mats
- Headlining appears to have been renewed and is in excellent condition
- New dashboard, sun visors and centre armrest
- All switchgear and Smiths gauges are in excellent working order
- Boot area is clean and tidy with new carpets and a full-size spare wheel with unused tyre underneath the boot floor
- Chrome sill covers are shiny but the “MG” branding has faded over the years
- Door cards are in very good condition
- Original three-spoke metal/leather steering wheel in very good shape, as is the gear lever and shift boot
- Modern stereo fitted
Having had money spent on new carpets and fantastic leather sports seats, the interior of this MGB is a lovely place to spend time.
The Exterior
- Bodywork is seemingly in very good condition with no major dents or damage to report
- Flamenco Red paintwork is bright and shiny with only minor blemishes on the front of the car the only noticeable flaws
- Originally Harvest Gold, the colour was changed during a previous restoration
- Original Dunlop composite wheels are in excellent order although have some discolouring to the MG logo. All have matching Uniroyal tyres that have seemingly covered very few miles.
- Exterior brightwork is generally in good condition although the windscreen trim is flawed slightly
- Exterior glass is in good order however there are some light scratches on the driver’s window from rolling up and down
- Headlights and taillights are in near-perfect condition
- Fabric roof in great condition
- Special tuning front spoiler fitted
- New badges
- Door locks do not function
The iconic red paintwork may not be the original colour but it certainly looks the part, contrasting beautifully with the increasingly sought-after black rubber bumpers. The period-correct wheels and chrome trim set the car off nicely, too.
The Mechanics
- The car has been serviced regularly over the last few years and there are no known major mechanical faults
- Engine and gearbox have recently been subject to a complete removal
- During this process some engine ancillaries were replaced and the gearbox was fully reconditioned
- The car was then taken for a full service and engine tune to ensure strong and smooth performance from the drivetrain
- Koni dampers fitted all-round provides fantastic road holding and handling
- New battery fitted as a result of an electrical gremlin that has now been resolved
- Stainless steel exhaust system is quiet but throaty
- Underbody is in good condition with the most recent inspection giving the floor, sills and chassis a clean bill of health
- K&N air filter fitted
The car was recently taken for an inspection at the MGOC Workshop and though the car is in very good mechanical health overall, there are some minor issues for the buyer to be aware of. The rear axle has been noted as ever so slightly noisy, and the car possibly requires a new brake servo due to an unusual sound from the brake pedal area. Some very minor play in the steering was also noticed by the technician, but 2x serial MG owners have since driven the car and found that it was nothing outside of the normal range for a nearly 50 year old MGB.
Summary
This is a charming example of the iconic MGB that has had all of the major restorative work completed by previous owners. Whether you’re new to classic car ownership or a serial MG owner, this lovely car is ready to be tinkered with and enjoyed for years to come.
