Recently the car has been through some mechanical love and bodywork that has resulted in a well-running example that is free from any worrying corrosion.
The History and Paperwork
- First registered on the 8th of December 1975 this car has gone on to have a lovely life
- According to the V5, it had a few owners between 1975-82
- The current owner acquired the car in 1982 and it has never been on the market since
- Throughout this 40-year ownership, the car has had a wonderful life
- The owner has kept an old-school logbook of every journey in the early days
- Along with fuel stops it also documents other works carried out on the car
- The V5 present is the same one provided in 1982
- Amongst the other assorted paperwork, you’ll find old MOT certificates
- There are also a lot of invoices from the works over the years
- The car did have a respray during the 1980s
- In 2019 it was put through a rather extensive recommissioning process
- During this process, it had new brake pads, discs, and calipers
- The fuel pump, fuel tanks, and fuel filter have been replaced
- Along with a service which also included new spark plugs
- It didn’t stop with mechanical jobs it also had a lot of bodywork completed
- This included a respray and other work on the body
- All of the bodywork totalled £6,000 alone
- Having been part of the family for so long it is now time for someone else to enjoy
- With a little bit of elbow grease, you will have a stunning car ready for the summer shows
The Interior
***Please note steering wheel featured in the images has now been changed back to the original, therefore the current red steering wheel will not come installed but will come as an extra the car***
- The interior of this Sovereign is very fetching indeed
- Finished in a striking red fabric the interior is very colourful
- The two front seats are in good condition with no rips or tears to the fabric
- The driver’s side headrest could do with some new foam
- You may find a few marks on the fabric, but no undue wear or damage is present
- Pivoting the seats forward reveals the well-preserved rear bench seat
- Much like the front seats there is no damage to this rear bench
- The central armrest also opens and closes without issue
- There are also a spare set of seats in the same fabric
- Back up in the front of the cabin let’s look at some other details
- Firstly, the original and fairly plain steering wheel has been replaced
- There is now a beautiful and matching Italvolanti leather steering wheel fitted
- This has aged well and is still a pleasure to use
- The original Daimler steering wheel has been kept and will come with the car
- Behind the wheel, the original dials are all still working
- The oil pressure gauge shows a strong reading as does the charge meter
- Following the dash, you will notice that the original veneer does have some wear
- The current owner also mentioned that the area under the steering wheel should be tidied up before you collect the car
- In the centre console, all of the original switch gear is still present
- The best switch is the fuel tank control button which will switch what tank the fuel is being drawn from
- It makes you feel like you’re in some sort of jet airplane
- The headliner is experiencing some sagging, but this shouldn’t be too difficult to repair
- Towards the rear is a cavernous boot
- Under the wooden floor, you’ll find a full-size spare wheel
- Overall, the interior of this rare Daimler is in good condition
- Some areas may require more attention than others
- However, nothing is stopping you from getting in and enjoying it straight away
The Exterior
- Externally this Sovereign is a bit of a looker
- It has that characteristic quad light set up at the front with the large chrome grille
- Being the coupe, it also has that lovely roof line and two doors
- When the windows are down it creates a lovely interior experience
- We did test the driver’s side windows, they retract and go up but won’t be setting any records
- The original dark blue paint and the black vinyl roof were changed in the 1980s as they did not suit the red interior
- The car underwent a respray in 2019 where the white vinyl roof was also replaced
- The external chrome work is also in good condition
- You may find a few marks dotted around the car but don’t forget that it is approaching 50 years old
- Underneath is very good indeed
- Importantly, this car has always been stored in a garage when not in use
- There shouldn’t be much work needed to bring out its show-winning potential
The Mechanics
- Mechanically this Daimler is in good condition
- It has been cared for properly throughout its life
- This is evident through the mountain of invoices
- On the day of the photos, it started up and idled nicely
- A short drive was undertaken around its neighbourhood, and it felt okay
- It selects drive and reverse with a positive feeling
- A lot of money has recently been spent on getting the car mechanically sound
- The fuel system has been replaced, along with a lot of the braking system
- This should be a ‘turnkey’ classic that you can get in any time and enjoy
- Throughout its years with the family, it has been all over the place
- Thanks to its 4.2 litre inline six and automatic gearbox it is nice and easy to live with
- You will love every mile completed at the helm of this Daimler
