The Appeal
It doesn’t feel like a stretch to suggest that BMW’s current M-car hegemony started here, with the simply named 2002 TII. And it all came about by accident.
BMW’s 02 range didn’t initially include a high performance version; after all, this was meant to be a sober-suited saloon. But in their spare time a couple of the firm’s engineers decided to drop the firm’s new M10 2litre under the bonnets of their company 02s and the Ti was born.
From 1971 the TII replaced the earlier car, adding fuel injection to the mix to deliver a 125bhp road rocket that capitalised on the 02’s lightness, excellent weight distribution and nimble chassis.
Only a few hundred 2002 TIIs were built in RHD every year and this is one of the last - a late registration 1975 car. Restored two years ago in beautiful burgundy metallic and with an equally well kept interior, it is a compelling example. The thick history file includes plenty of work by specialists like Munich Legends and Jaymic and it was recently dyno tuned.
The enthusiast seller uses the car sparingly but daily so it is reliable too. The 2002 TII is a brilliant example of BMW’s high performance engineering prowess and this one looks both usable and tempting.

BMW’s ‘New Class’ saloons hid some clever detailing beneath their sober suits to create a style that has been both influential and timeless. The 2002’s three box design is accented by neat features like the clamshell bonnet and boot and reverse rake front grille.
This car’s recently applied burgundy metallic paintwork particularly suits the shape and works well with the Minilite gold alloys. The exterior is in the sort of condition you would expect from that refresh with no visible deterioration or corrosion across the panels or underside.
The interior is similarly well presented and pleasingly highly original right down to the BMW Bavaria factory radio which was specially sourced by the vendor.
The Mechanics
- 125bhp fuel injected 1,990ccc M10 BMW 4cyl engine
- 4spd manual gearbox
- Sparingly used as a daily driver by the vendor
- Recently dyno tuned
- Extensive history file with much work by Munich Legends and Jaymic
Of the gradual evolution of the 2002 Ti models the TII is particularly desirable because it introduced fuel injection and a hike in power to 125bhp. Very few of these cars were built in RHD and we know from chassis records that this example was one of the last. It is an original UK car.
The thick history file attests to the care of its owners who have used specialists Munich Legends and Jaymic extensively over the last 10-15 years to keep the car in good order. A quick perusal of the history photographs provides extra information on this work and is well worth investigating.
The vendor had the car dyno tuned in 2022 and has been using it regularly as a daily driver. Both these facts should provide extra reassurance that this is a well sorted and reliable example of a highly usable four seater classic.
