Appeal
A 70’s Beetle convertible, what’s not to like! Purists should note that it’s not to factory standard spec, but the improvements are subtle and surely add to the car's appeal and driver appeal.
It features an uprated engine, better suspension, disc brakes, leather Porsche seats, slightly wider wings, the list goes on and of course there’s the new hood, wonderful deep red paint job and that chromed short-shift gear lever.
If it's roof down summer classic driving pleasure, 4 up of course, that you're after, then you would be well advised to give this Beetle serious consideration.

- Pioneer radio
The interior of this beetle has been substantially upgraded to include electrically adjusted Porsche leather front seats, with the rear bench being re-trimmed to match. Black carpets line the floor and are in great condition as too are the matching black door cards.
The gear lever has been replaced with a quick shift alloy and chrome item and there is an additional pod below the dash carrying gauges showing rev counter, battery power and oil temperature.
Overall, it’s in great condition, showing very little signs of wear.
Exterior
- Full respray in Tornado red
- Replacement hood
- Fuchs alloys
- Very well presented
Bought by the previous owner after a small engine fire damaged the engine bay, lid some rear wing paintwork and the hood, a full paint re-spray ensued.
Slightly widened fibreglass wings were fitted, any other body blemishes were seen to and then the deep VW Tornado red paint was applied. We're sure you’ll agree that it suits the Beetle very well.
There are micro blisters present on the wings if you look carefully, but they don’t at all detract from the way this VW presents. The hood is a recent replacement item and appears to fit very well and there is a hood cover that goes with the car for covering & tidying when the roof is down.
Finally, it sits on original Porsche 16” Fuchs polished alloy wheels which just look fab !
Mechanics
- 1776cc engine
- Lowered & adjustable suspension
- Disc brakes
The vendor tells us that the engine fitted has been uprated to 1776cc and breathes through twin Empi carbs fitted with free flow air filters. Exhaust gases are dealt with via a CSP performance exhaust and you’ll also find fitted under the lid an alternator conversion kit, new serpentine belt and pulleys, and a deep sump to carry more oil which aids overall cooling.
It certainly ran well during the photoshoot and sounded great especially with the roof down.
We understand the suspension has been lowered and is adjustable, with all suspension bushes replaced with upgraded urethane items and there is a new steering box and steering rods along with uprated disc brakes, which all go towards making this Beetle handle just a little bit better .
Summary
A very pretty Karmann Beetle with subtle performance enhancing upgrades in lovely condition. An attractive proposition for someone who’s looking for some summer fun in something just a little bit different from the norm.
