Highlights
- Very presentable both inside and out
- Left-hand drive and KPH speedometer make this car perfect for continental touring
- Benefits from the simplicity of Stromberg carburation in lieu of fuel injection
The Appeal
While styling by Karmann of Germany made the Triumph TR6 appear quite different to its TR predecessors, the basic formula of a separate chassis and straight-six engine remained more or less identical to previous models. Contemporary road tests therefore praised the TR6 for remaining true to the brand’s heritage, harking back to the bygone age of the British roadster.
The TR6 sold well and was particularly successful in the United States of America, which is where this 1974 example was supplied to. It was repatriated in 1990 and has been enjoyed by just 2 UK owners since. Still in left-hand drive and with a KPH speedometer, we think this would be the perfect car for continental touring.
The History and Paperwork
- Imported to the UK in 1990
- Acquired by the vendor from long term UK owner
- Recently received a fluid service and comprehensive vehicle check
- V5C present
- Collection of invoices for work carried out since import
- Heritage certificate confirming the car was originally Sapphire Blue
- TR Register paperwork and TR Register Technicalities DVDs
The Interior
- Black vinyl seats with red piping are in very good overall condition with minimal wear
- The door cards match the seats and appear in really smart condition
- The dashboard top is in good shape although the fascia would perhaps benefit from refinishing
- All of the switchgear looks to be complete and reportedly functions well
- Smiths KPH speedometer
- Presentable carpeting throughout
- The inside of the boot is in fair condition and contains a wheel brace
The Exterior
- Red paintwork really suits the car and looks to have been well applied in the past
- The vendor points out a little microblistering to the bonnet and a few other localised areas but it generally continues to present really well overall
- The bodywork looks to be very straight which is evidenced by the door shuts and panel gaps
- The chrome looks really smart in its current state
- Underneath, the chassis is reportedly really solid
- The car sits upon original / original style deep dished steel wheels, which have a quintessentially ‘70s appearance and are in good overall condition
- The folding roof reportedly operates well and is in fair condition
The Mechanics
- 2.5-litre straight-six engine
- Stromberg carburettors
- The exhaust is apparently quite loud although the vendor has found no leaks
- Starts, runs and drives really nicely and is great fun out on the road
- Recent fuel filter, and oil change
- Checked over by the vendor’s workshop
Summary
The Triumph TR6 is without doubt one of the great British sports cars that continues to be revered the world over. Equipped with carburettors rather than Lucas mechanical fuel injection, this is a simpler setup that can be easily worked on while out and about.
This is a really usable example which we think has great potential for road trips abroad due to being left-hand drive.
