1974 Triumph TR6

Highlights

  • In the same family since 1986
  • Owned by a retired classic and vintage car restorer
  • Accompanied by a vast history file with numerous invoices and notes

The Appeal

While Triumph is usually synonymous with Italian styling - courtesy of one Giovanni Michelotti - the TR6 signalled a change in approach when Karmann of Osnabrück, Germany was tasked with its design. That meant the TR6 looked markedly different to any Triumph before or since, although the mechanicals changed relatively little from the outgoing (and excellent) TR5.

This 1974 example is offered as a non-running project following around four years off the road. It's no barnfind or rustbucket, though. This TR6 was lovingly restored and cherished by its owner, but ill health meant they were no longer able to use it, culminating in the aforementioned period in storage. It's been in the same family since 1986 - almost four decades.

For those seeking a rewarding winter recommissioning project, this is the time to buy, and in this Triumph we've found a brilliant candidate.

History and Paperwork

  • Registered in 1974
  • Owned by a retired classic and vintage car restorer who maintained the car himself until poor health stopped him
  • No service book with the car, but many invoices for parts purchased over the years as well as several pages of notes
  • Includes fitting instructions for the Bosch fuel pump
  • Now road tax and MOT exempt; the last MOT certificate expired on 20 October 2016
  • Car has been in the family since 1986
  • Bought as a restoration project by the owner to work on alongside his clients' cars
  • Kept in a garage, maintained, and enjoyed for weekend outings
  • Up for sale as a project as no attempt has been made to start the engine on the advice of a mechanic

The Condition

  • Resprayed to burgundy red from its original yellow and fully restored to a beautiful condition some years ago
  • The Triumph still presents well overall and while there are some cosmetic blemishes (photographed), we think it could readily be enjoyed as-is once the mechanicals are in order
  • Some small areas of surface corrosion, including small spots on the chrome and microblistering to the paint in places
  • Comes with a tonneau cover
  • Soft top has a little light rust inside but the mechanism works as it should
  • The leather upholstery looks in very good condition
  • The cabin electrics and instruments are untested, but appear in good shape

The Mechanics

  • 2.5-litre fuel-injected straight-six
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • Selling as a non-running project for recommissioning/restoration
  • Car hasn't been run for 3-4 years but we're not aware of any known issues prior to when parked
  • A mechanic advised the vendor that the fuel tank and associated components need replacing at a minimum before an attempt is made to start the engine
  • The battery is (unsurprisingly) dead, but a temporary one was fitted to check that the lights worked which they did
