1974 Triumph TR6

Highlights

  • Desirable later fuel injection variant
  • Nicely presented in good overall condition
  • Striking colour scheme
  • UK spec RHD example
  • Tax, MOT and ULEZ exempt

The Appeal

Straight six open top splendour. The Triumph TR6 was arguably the best of the bunch when looking at the TR lineup. The British roadster scene was becoming somewhat scarce by the time the TR6 arrived on the scene but it did an excellent job of reminding buyers that there was still an option for a good quality traditional British roadster, and as such is often seen to be one of the last of its kind, with the later TR7 and TR8 moving away from the traditional roadster ideals.

The TR6 today is seen as a highly collectible slice of Triumph excellence, the poster child at the time, the TR6 sings of times when the marque dominated the industry and as such demand has always been consistently high. A genuine RHD example rather than the more commonly emerging LHD US imports, this charming 1974 car is a rather smart example of the esteemed model, in very presentable good overall condition aesthetically and mechanically, boasting a few goodies including a sports exhaust and replacement mohair hood.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 21/08/1974
  • Right hand drive example
  • We are informed by the vendor that the car was subject to a historic restoration by a classic car specialist whilst under the ownership of a previous keeper
  • The car has been kept off the road in storage for around three years, only recently coming back out onto the roads
  • Accompanied by a selection of previous MOT certificates
  • V5 registration document also present with the vehicle
  • Tax, MOT and ULEZ exempt due to the car’s age and historic status

The Condition

  • A generally well presented example of a later TR6, in nice overall condition
  • Finished in a bold, vibrant red external colour scheme
  • Bodywork and paint are generally presentable with a good shine from the red panelling, however there is room for improvement with some general light blemishing to be seen in places
  • Good chrome trim used throughout, with quality bumpers front and rear
  • Exterior lighting and badges are in good order and work well to make this into a quality car
  • Marvellous 15” steel wheels reside at all four corners with decorative chrome trim rings attached, all in great shape
  • Folding soft top roof in fine form, with a replacement mohair top having been fitted in the cars more recent life according to the vendor
  • The roof itself latches, folds and fixes into place smoothly
  • Accompanying black hood cover for open top driving
  • High quality interior space, well preserved and still in very good condition
  • Deep black upholstery used throughout, still rich in colour with very limited if anything in terms of wear or age to be seen
  • Internal switchgear and trim presented in fine fettle
  • High quality wood finish dashboard fascia
  • Plush black carpeting throughout the cabin and boot floors
  • SONY radio head unit
  • Tri spoke Triumph steering wheel
  • Although starting, and sounding well, and presenting well from a distance, there are various areas which could be improved upon depending on the new owners standards. These include but are not limited to paint (chips, runs, etc), body (slightly dropped door, etc) and mechanical (a good service, sticky overdrive, etc).

The Mechanics

  • Later fuel injection variant
  • Highly revered 2.5 litre straight six engine
  • We are informed by the vendor that the engine has been subject to a rebuild whilst under the ownership of a previous keeper
  • Engine and surrounding engine bay are extremely well presented in good clean form
  • The car fires into life quickly and comfortably and settles into a suitable idle nicely, holding good oil pressure
  • Engine mated to a four speed manual gearbox with overdrive in 3rd and 4th gear
  • Aftermarket sports exhaust system fitted with a more defined, but not obnoxious exhaust note
  • The vendor notes that both the choke and bonnet cables could benefit from replacement, and as such new cables are included with the car upon sale
  • Whilst the car starts and drives with no obvious faults being evident other than those noted however this vehicle is presented as needing a good going over before any use as there may be additional faults which are not noted having been in storage for some three years
